Doubt there'd be a way to give non-Windows users non-Flash ads, but you never know. :\

Graphical is fine, the issue comes when they distract you from the actual content.

I wouldn't allow flash ads, obviously, and the whole point of these ads would to have people see them. Putting them on the bottom of the page would be literally worthless (especially judging from other pages that have these types, where the ones at the bottom are always not used).

Maybe just on the front page above the forum list, then?

Meh, I don't really care too much.

It would be annoying if it interfered with the post flow though (between posts), but I could deal with it.

Front page on top of the forum list would definitely work.

Me, I'm okay with wherever you choose to put them.

Just to make my suggestion public: Underneath or just above "Users currently online/currently in ____". I think it's a good, eyecatching spot. Plus, I know that I generally look to see who's online, and other people prolly do, too.

I might put it there on the forum index for logged in users, and there for all pages for non-logged in users, maybe.

Maybe.

I can't really donate right now so if interacting with ads helps you out, I'm all for it. I never block ads unless they're ungodly annoying, which I know these wouldn't be.

I had Google ads whitelisted until they started getting big and animated. If it would really just be text ads (with non-huge fonts) that aren't intermixed with the content (above/below post box, not in), I'd whitelist them again.

I've observed a direct relationship between ad placement and forum quality over the years:

This sounds just about right. I'd even keep one at the bottom at all times as well.

In my own designs I avoid actually saying "registered users see fewer ads" (except perhaps on the actual registration page), as it makes it seem like an annoy-people-into-registering tactic, whereas doing it without saying makes it like a nice unmentioned bonus for those who do.

Are the ads a necessity or are you just trying to eliminate the need for donations? I tend to ignore any and all ads, but I understand their usefulness. I think as long as its not on every page, maybe just the index and forum pages, then it would be ok under the online users or users currently in ** part.

I added a single ad to the index page. I was planning on adding it to every page below the header for non-logged in users, but fonlineusers() got in the way and I don't feel like putting that in $header2 (where it should be).

Every time someone blocks a Project Wonderful ad, God kills a adorable_cute_thing. Please, think of the adorable_cute_things.

And before anybody says ARRGH BUT THEY'LL BE SHITTY FLASH ADS WITH SOUND OMG I HATE EVERYTHING:

In the event we actually get bids (and SMWCentral does, I don't see why we can't make at least $0.50 a week... which is more than I make off of it now, regardless), I get to approve them! And I can, you know, delete ones that encroach on the annoyance scale, as opposed to AdSexboltsandbindingposts from Google.

The more you know -=*

Also, in the event this thing just shows "your ad here" for a week (which it shouldn't), I'll delete it and spare us the space it wastes.

Ads by Project Wonderful! Your ad here, right now: $0

$0 dollars?? This is blasphemy! I demand them to give me money for displaying my ads!

..er. Adblock disabled. Let's see how this'll look like.

If the ads get annoying (but I trust that they won't), I'll let them load and just hide them using custom css.

Note that you can also create an account if you want and put an interesting ad up for $0 if you want. Nothing stops anybody here from doing it, if they want to advertise something.

Yes, $0.

If you really want a banner I could draw one.

I testdoodled one up for myself in all of 30 seconds and bidded for the space :V

I was using the banner that we have for the site that I write for. I just don't think it was the correct size and therefore made it look funny.

On the bright side, I've finally installed the ad block add-on for Firefox.
