The thread title does seem a bit strange to some of you. But this thread is about how perhaps your family cured you of an illness through superstitions, home-made elixers, etc.

To explain the thread title: My Grandfather had a meteorite that could heal headaches and orthoritus(sp? Basically joint pain). Well, when I was younger I had a migrane headache to where I was screaming in pain. My grandfather brought the stone and put it on my head. Surprisingly, in less than a half hour, the headache was gone! It's a miracle!

Then came my flu. I used to live in what was known as "The Igloo" from my family. Had no heating, was a nice house and all, but everyone in my family got a very bad flu from it. Ranging from vomiting to hallucinations due to high fevers (I unfortunately had to be rushed to the hospital). Anyways, I remember my dad going to his liquor closet while bringing out two teaspoons of whisky. Now, some of you guys right now might find this a little disturbing; it definitely helped me sleep better, not to mention I was over my flu two days later.

I would not advise giving your kids alcohol. But when they are sick? It's good to give them A LITTLE bit. My dad put vodka in his finger and stuck it in my mouth when I was a baby (I grew up with very bad teeth) and he claims it helped sooth the pain.

Know any home made medicine?

Cayenne pepper on every damn ailment you've got. It works. Trust me. Old Sicilian trick. Got a cut? Cayenne. Got a boil? Cayenne. Got a canker sour? Cayenne. I swear this stuff does the body good. Yea, that and hard liquor in your wounds if you need them numbed, but that's an old pioneer trick.

I have made spicy tea. It cures colds and mild-flus.

INGREDENTS:

TEA (user choice, not that it will matter)
SUGAR (1 spoon full, or honey)
LEMON JUICE (or, in a pinch, vinigar.)
GINGER (2 spoon fulls)
PEPPER (half a spoon full)
Cayenne Pepper (1/4th a spoon full) or pepper flakes.

Mix in a large glass, drink once in the morning and once in the evening.

It works, only by blackmail, I think. The body knows if it does not get better it will have to keep drinking this stuff.

Anything for wisdom tooth pain? Advil has slowly stopped getting rid of the pain.

What? Where did I say I was... wha?

...OH. No, I'm not recommending Advil, I'm saying that Advil has STOPPED working. I need a different remedy.

Way back in 1997, my dad got hit with a mysterious illness. He was sick for a long time, although neither my mom or I got it so it might not have been contagious. He covered himself with blankets and lay near the fire in what I think he said was some Native American remedy to basically get as hot as you can while you have a fever and it will go away eventually. It worked, but he's reported odd pains in his body ever since.

Yeah, that's called sweating it out.
I'm... not entirely sure it works.

It's arthritis.

Unfortunately, my family doesn't seem to have any homemade remedies for sicknesses, other than canned cream of chicken soup. For me, I just drink a shitton of water/juice and get as much rest as possible.

Not a family member, but a friend of mind would make her own lotions to help with dry skin and rashes.

Well, growing up with an MA (Medical Assistant) for a mom... we didn't really use any natural remedies. My mother was a walking pharmacy. Anything you needed, she had it in her purse. Headaches, fevers, swelling, muscle pain, nausea... all was remedied by something she could just pull out and tap a few tablets into your hand.

Thought she would always make us gargle salt water when we had a sore throat. That was nasty. I still do it to this day if it gets really bad. But if its just mild, I'll just suck on a lozenge.

Yes, it works. For example, if you have high fever, you basically sweat the heat out of your body.

Clogged up nose or throat? I go to the sauna, steam helps a great deal. :>

White pepper. We always use white pepper to cure the flu.
I don't know if it works, but, I take it anyway. One can never be too careful.
