Month. Damn you thread title limit!

Anyways, understand there are couple of you guys who might like this. Straight from the whitehouse!

Presidential Proclamation--Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month

As Americans, it is our birthright that all people are created equal and deserve the same rights, privileges, and opportunities. Since our earliest days of independence, our Nation has striven to fulfill that promise. An important chapter in our great, unfinished story is the movement for fairness and equality on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This month, as we recognize the immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans, we renew our commitment to the struggle for equal rights for LGBT Americans and to ending prejudice and injustice wherever it exists.

You can discuss the rest from here.

And in less pro-LGBT news, the recent repeal of don't ask don't tell could end up vetoed by Obama.
Fucking lovely.

Shouldn't everyday be a pride day, really?

Because of something completely unrelated, too.

I think we'd be better off without the 'pride' months, to be honest. Most of the time the problem's caused from them creating administrations around a certain minority and then, eventually and inevitably, making their situation worse. This is pretty much for all minorities. No, I'm not ragging on all minorities here, I just see things like this as part of escalating things and making those that aren't 'one with the majority' or whatever even worse for themselves. Why? Why would getting your own month do that? Because it makes you more of a target anyways thanks to this.

Sound dumb? It really isn't. Anything like this will get more discrimination thanks to it...and perhaps even on other certain minorities that have pride months to make them look even worse in that regard. Who knows? That's another thing I'd rather not delve into.

Seriously, though. This really doesn't help...but then I'm one of those straight, white male minorities that doesn't get to judge anything in that particular vein either or risk discrimination for not feeling the way I should about everything that special interest groups ram down my throat. But, on the flip side, there are a ton of people among said groups that love to discriminate BECAUSE you're not like them, regardless of me not having a problem to begin with.

I'm just saying that with all these groups thinking they have an axe to grind that there are some days where the straight, white male is Paul Bunyan with the amount of hell one will take for 'not understanding'.

I really don't see how having a "month" dedicated to any group is exactly bad for anything. I don't really think Black History Month has resulted in anything bad, but...

In any case, it should come as no surprise that the #1 thing standing in the way of repeal is our good friends on the (R) side of the aisle. Good example: "I'll be for repeal as soon as Gates is" (Gates announces he is) "Just kidding, I'm still against it" McCain.

Ugh, pride months. I don't frankly see the point, but maybe that's because they're far too big and come far too often here.

Like, fine be LBGT it's all nice, I have nothing against it and want people to be able to be accepted for their sexuality.

But you don't need huge festivals for it as they get over here.

I hope this Pride month doesn't get all to overblown as the pride things over here get.

This month might actually be pretty, we might see the repeal of DADT get done, we're expecting judge Walker to rule on prop 8 in California by mid June, Martha Coakley (Atorney General of MA) is challenging DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), and I think I read that the blood donating ban on gay men is being reconsidered.

Believe it or not some people actually do enjoy the parades (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4592541.stm), what's so hard about staying home and ignoring them if you don't like them?

I would if I could, but when the pride parade is in Sweden we got bombarded with celebrities kissing each other and going "GAY IS SO GOOD EVERYONE SHOULD ACCEPT ME NOW" 24/7. Hell, even the politicians all of a sudden start going "oh gay is so nice and great" and make it into one big PR stunt, and I'm sick of it.

It practically gets showed down my throat the whole time it lasts over here. And I don't like that. I don't know if it's as bad for you guys, but I really hope it isn't.

Change the channel/radio station or move from wherever you're seeing it? Do you get uncomfortable seeing celebrities kiss? If so, I assume you don't see romantic movies, soaps, and similar shows, right?

I seriously think you're overreacting.

It's not that I get uncomfortable with seeing celebrities kiss.

It's that I get mad at how insanely fake the whole shebang is, it feels like a lot of them are just out to sell a few extra votes/CDs in the LBGT crowd.

And that fakeness would still persist even if I didn't see it, and trust me, I try to avoid it.

I think it's a nice gesture... Does anyone else think that?

I mean, I get people's concerns about people going crazy and it getting blown out of proportion, but I believe that it's good to see Obama recognizing that LGBT people are deserving of the same treatment everyone else gets.

I have a few friends who were treated poorly because of their orientation, and I'm glad that Obama is giving them an "official" month to celebrate who they are. Hopefully people will be more tolerant during this month, but who knows?

I guess we'll see whether this was a good or bad idea soon...

I agree with you I'm LGBT myself, and we often suffer discrimination in ways that would be ridiculous to a straight person. Like, many of us are denied jobs and housing and are forced to be homeless and/or prostitutes. How bad this is varies throughout the USA as some places are more liberal. In some areas, such as Detroit, LGBT people are even shot because of their orientation and/or gender identity. I'm glad that the Obama administration is finally taking steps to give us eqial rights

You may want to read this paragraph of the article if you're in doubt:

Much work remains to fulfill our Nation's promise of equal justice under law for LGBT Americans. That is why we must give committed gay couples the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. We must protect the rights of LGBT families by securing their adoption rights, ending employment discrimination against LGBT Americans, and ensuring Federal employees receive equal benefits. We must create safer schools so all our children may learn in a supportive environment. I am also committed to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" so patriotic LGBT Americans can serve openly in our military, and I am working with the Congress and our military leadership to accomplish that goal.

I consider myself bisexual yet I have to agree with Girlydragon here.

Granted, I don't know how the US thing will be. But as it's displayed here in sweden it's just garbage trying to use the spotlight of something important.
