According to an exec at blizzard, DRM is a backwards waste of time. Instead, they plan to use a one-time online activation after which there's no need for any internet or DRM in order to play single-player (obviously, internet is needed for multiplayer).

To quote,
"We need our development teams focused on content and cool features, not anti-piracy technology."

I really like this guy... I should try his stuff.

Oh wait, I already play all his games. Only one I didn't get that much in to was WC3. But I like their thinking, DRM does suck. If you want to play online, then make it validate your log in tied to a valid purchase of the game. Oh wait, thats Battle.net

DRM is stupid anyway... and it's usually cracked rather quickly (look at stuff like DVD CSS and Blu-ray AACS, especially with Blu-rays... you can brute-force the entire range of 128-bit integers in a matter of hours or even minutes on a relatively modern machine =P)

I've never really been royally screwed over by DRM myself, but I don't really use my computer for games that much... and this xkcd comic comes to mind about how DRM causes people to be "criminals" either way. =)

The Blizzard boss is resigned to the fact that, how ever many people and man-hours you throw at anti-piracy measures, it can never be enough. "If you start talking about DRM and different technologies to try to manage it, it's really a losing battle for us, because the [cracking] community is always so much larger, and the number of people out there that want to try to counteract that technology, whether it's because they want to pirate the game or just because it's a curiosity for them, is much larger than our development teams."

It's quite true, and a wonder why not more execs think that way.

Hopefully more companies will follow suit here. DRM has got rather ridiculous.

This.

If people are going to pirate stuff, they're going to pirate it. It's just an inevitability. Nice to know that some companies are seeing it this way.

They say this at the same time as killing LAN play and requiring Battlenet logins :/

Not saying it's a 'bad' thing, just that it isn't that clear cut.

Think about it. This boss of a major gaming company is denouncing controversial and major anti-piracy measures, saying that they are ineffectual and that any measure will be hacked. This could in fact have more companies think the same way and possibly dissuade them from using DRM level or above measures due to the success of this one company despite people pirating their games as well.

This may help the common gamer more than what we're thinking it to be.

Hmm.

Piracy will never stop (there will always be those who just want it for free), but it'll come down to what should be a reasonable level when the product becomes worth the price. Right now, with so many DRM schemes a pirated copy is better even than a free legit copy.
