It doesn't look like it's a permanent solution but...

This is one heck of a risky design, that's for sure. External, prone to possible infection or blood clotting...but it works.

Question is, how long until we're getting to the point where that isn't as risky or risky at all?

Yeah, I can see how easy it could be for the guy to get an infection, but breakthroughs aren't made trying to be safe, and I'm sure he's aware of that, too.
