North Korea has likely attacked a South Korean warship, killing 40+.

In before thermonuclear shitstorm.

Christ... That's not good.
If North Korea has to own up to what it's done... I just hope the person who wrote the article is over-exaggerating the chances of all-out war

It's over exaggerated. South Korea and Japan have sunk ships that wander into their territory as well.

EXCEPT, the South Korean ship was operating within its demarcated waters. Also, to add salt to the wound, the US has more or less confirmed that KJI gave the order to fire upon the ship. If this were truly a simple 'sink enemy ship operating within our territory,' KJI wouldn't have been involved.

As for war, it'll only happen if South Korea retaliates. (Which would blow chunks because my cousin is over there with a medical unit right now...)

I'm hoping that even if this does develop into a conflict, another struggle between the Koreas won't grow to involve the whole world.

The US military tends to involve itself into everybody else's problems, for better or worse. If South Korea retaliates, we're probably pretty boned too.

Nuclear war is highly unlikely; we didn't end the Cold War to be fooled by some Cold War-era trickster tactics.

Much more likely, just like the era this battle occurred in, the war between the two occurs and it behaves more conventionally.

Because China is sort of trapped here--in the imaginary case they'd try and nuke us, they must realize that'd make all those debts we have to them useless, which would in turn collapse their economy.

So they're trapped. On the other side, Russia and the US have been working together on the nuclear thing for a little while now, and there's even a mild chance that Russia might side against North Korea, pretty much dooming it--as even if China wants to support North Korea... do you think any nation is crazy enough (barring North Korea) to think it can take on both the US and Russia in a potentially nuclear war and win? No way.

It's just like any good tabloid rag story--stroke fear and irrational beliefs to get more readers.

The thing is, it only took a press of one person's button to fire the torpedo that sank the Warship. It will only take a press of a button to launch a nuke. Seriously, if one single leader gets irrationally pissed off for no reason then it could easily happen.

Let's hope for no nuclear holocaust during World War III in that case... we were doing so well, too... =/

Hopefully this war doesn't last like 2 decades, either... but I can see China siding with North Korea and Japan siding with South Korea in this case...

I'm with MM on this China thing. I don't think it's ever been done in history, but using a debt as a position of power might actually work for the US. At least China's chances of overtly supporting North Korea are somewhat diminished.

I love how the US keeps fucking all over the UN and still got veto power... <___<;

The ideal is to work towards less war and not more... to be honest, this could have been done in many other ways, such as cutting off trading with them, etc. V_v;

There's a major difference between "invade a sovereign nation" and "post a few more troops in a friendly nation in case things go bad". In this case, it's the latter.

Also, the major thing that happened is that they cut trade.

I hate these catch-22 situations that may ultimately decide the fate of humanity. If we do make North Korea pay, it's war, but if we don't, they might start the war anyway.

Christ...

Nah, see the North Koreans, sad to say, do stuff like this all the time. In fact, I remember a few years back there was a incident where NK commandos slaughtered several SK jungle villagers on a stealth mission. South Korea has been putting up with this crap for years and they're at their wits end. If there's going to be war, it'll be directly initiated by South Korea, however, for the record, North Korea ought to take full blame as they've been instigating this for years now. But of course, public opinion will make that decision if it happens, not history... :/

China's pretty much with North Korea at this point.

In the meantime, North Korea's threatening immediate attack if South Korea intrudes on the maritime border.
