250 install, 200 a month.

200 a month?

Fuck. That.

It sounded good until the $200/month part, and says nothing about whether there's a bandwidth limit (there's a 50Mbps service with only 100GB/month around here, so ...)

Still, you can't get anything near that here even if you were willing to spend $200/month

Kinda revolves around Google's attempts at gigabit broadband service but I never heard a quote on how expensive it'd be. If Google thrusts that for 99 a month or so, uncapped, you can guarantee Comcast just lost the war.

This is remarkably aggrivating given certain other countries have comparable speeds with far lower prices.

100 megs at ~24 or so a month comparably in Sweden/Japan, I believe.

Cox offers 10 mbps as their base, thats plenty for me. They just updated their digital cable menus, too. It looks nice. I don't even think anything but Cox is offered here, as far as cable companies go.

My 12 meg service is enough for me at 45 a month. 1.4MB/s max downloads? I don't really need much faster.

It's more the fact that we have to pay more for worse service than anywhere else, all while being told "It's the newest and fastest ever!".

Yea, but at the same time it doesn't take as much to get smaller countries up to speed than it does us.

But like we really put priority on technology in the grand scheme of things.

And we wonder why Japan's beating the crap out of us in that regard.

And that's 100Mbps for both download and upload, with unlimited bandwidth ...

Compare that to the 1Mbps upload available here (but some countries are still worse)

Wow, I didn't notice the up speed so low. Thats ridiculous, the only reason you would need that much bandwidth is for hosting and you would need that much for up, not just down.

The other difference is that we have no competition here via government-granted monopolies.

Every other decent country has many, many competing internet services.

America is a very stupid country as far as telecommunications go.

I can say it's not any better up north.

Basically take whatever you get in the US, and slap a crappy bandwidth cap on it

I'm simply wondering this:

Where did that extra 5 MBPS come from?! I'm thinking it's room for overhead, but still!

Paulguy's Post configuration
While I'm fine with my ~3Mbit connection, it would be nice if the really high bandwidth options other countries have were available here at a reasonable price. In this neighborhood the best you can get is with the cable company though, and they're rather pricey, and the service sucks. Most services in this area are unmaintained because it's close to the ghetto. We just got stable AT&T cellular service a couple years ago, and we still don't have fios available.

And having politicians that bend over every chance they get and ignore their own people doesn't help.

I had Comcast for a few years, and always thought it cost too much (except toward the beginning when I took adventage of a promotion for new customers). At least once, they said they'd lower my rates and then raised them

I have Sprint and I'm paying 60 per month and all I get is around 100kb/s download speeds at most. :/ I'm near Philly and I generally get good signal (although sometimes it drops entirely to 1XRTT and crashes )
