So, there's a relatively unknown amount of methane clathrate lurking at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. If this blow-out continues, it make initiate a Clathrate Gun event, and essentially destroy all the oxygen in the Gulf, and possibly leading to an extinction-level catastrophe.

Of course, this is all conjecture, since we don't actually know how much is down there, but just something that occurred to me when I heard about the methane ice building up on that first dome they attempted to drop.

It's so sad when profits and speed take priority over safety and lives.

I hope they pay big time, for all the lives lost because of them, environment ruined because of them, and their general irresponsibility. There are so many places where they went wrong and should have slowed down, backed up, and fixed problem. Even when the one guy said "We have a huge safety problem here," his supervisor just went "Nah." That's just irresponsible and wrong.

And now another one of their drilling stations has come up as being unsafe? 95% of plans not being approved? And people were emailed, saying that "catastrophic operator errors" could happen because of it? And they still didn't react?

Jeez... I'm out of words for these people now. How much people are willing to sacrifice for money sickens me.

This is just a tragedy. I know so much is already being done, but its not enough. They need to drop 100,000 tons of concrete on that hole or something (I know its not probably but you get my drift). This will take years to reverse, if not decades. It has not only affected the wildlife, but also the people that live there. There needs to be more done.

It's truly despicable, how BP's execs are up on Capitol Hill just dodging the question and passing the buck onto subcontractors and the like.

They'll probably end up getting off scot-free because nobody gives a fuck about anything anymore.

In an ideal world, destroying an entire ecosystem would be grounds for revoking a business's right to exist and incarcerating anyone whose actions (or inactions, in this case) are directly responsible.

At the very least, ALL of their earnings above and beyond the absolute minimum required to operate should go towards fixing this and making sure it never happens again.

If only...

Visual aid to the "top kill" process

It sounds pretty interesting and I hope it works. Its not like this has happened before, there's no precedent to go by. Its all shooting in the dark.

I really hope this works; the live feed of the oil billowing out is sickening. I guess it's better late than never.

Gulf spill now bigger than Valdez

Did they ever think it wouldn't be? I guess had it been contained within days or even 2 weeks, it wouldn't have been as bad. But this is going on a month... Of course its bigger than a 1 ship oil spill.

It appears to have worked but BP says don't hold your breath. It'll be 2 more days until its 100% clear the impact this procedure is having on the vent. I for one will say, "Its about fucking time."

I really like how they're finding massive, massive underwater blobs of this shit now. Just in case the massive thing at the surface wasn't enough.

Eugh.

Big amen to everything BMF said. These companies make a habit of destroying the Earth for money. I guess they think they can eat that money once they've killed all the environment?

Good. I hope the oil company(ies) pay for every bit of restoration for the damage this is causing.
