I start this quest with a Hex editor (HxD), Tile viewer (Djinn Tile Mapper) and a Sonic the Hedgehog ROM.
Where do I begin with the process of modding the game in a way that is meaningful? |

I've never hacked sonic the hedgehog,
but the people over at sonic retro most definitely have.
I'd try checking over there

| Since I'm sure he'd want to know, and I don't want to make a fool of myself for starting a new topic because I don't know either, what's a good way to decompress graphics? |

Honestly, just use the tools provided for you already. SonED is a great way to go about hacking Sonic these days. info.sonicretro.org should have just about all you need on this subject.

I'm not a rom hacker but I'll just guess and say you just need to find the compression algorithm that was used and reverse it, maybe? Maybe some programs can already do this ... or the compression is already documented. The console it's made for and emulators that can load it should obviously be able to decompress it so that might be a place to look. |

Well I was gonna originally use a decompressor to decompress the graphics in Final Fight 2 so I could look at some more stuff, but I never took into account that each game could have its own method of decompression.
Kind of surprised me, actually. Then again, I'm not much of a ROM hacker. |
