I have been using mIRC for several years as I find it highly satisfying for what I need/do.

However... mIRC is not free, but before you could ignore all the pop ups where it asks you to pay for it, sadly, that's not anymore. So I have no other option but to move on to another client.

So the ball is, I need an IRC client suggestion. I would prefer it to not be browser based as I tend to like to close down firefox even though I keep IRC up. Supporting more then one network connection at once is also necessarily for me.
If it can stack into the notification area is also a plus. (For the record, I run Vista)

I personally only use the Miranda IM built in IRC, but if I were to get a dedicated client for IRC then I'd go with XChat

Edit: Decided to switch the link to the free version.

You could always step back to an older version of mIRC.

If you insist on something else, though, you could either try a free version of X-chat (which sucks anyway on Windows), or, as much as I feel dirty suggesting these, IceChat or HydraIRC.

I wouldn't touch IRC clients that come with IM clients, they're not usually that great from my experiences. :/

Miranda IRC or Pidgin are usually good bets on Windows... I personally use Pidgin for my IRC... (and Miranda on 98, since Pidgin doesn't support 9x anymore...)

I don't know about Pidgin but Miranda isn't worth it just for IRC.

It's good for having a couple of IM services going at once, and the IRC functionality works.

But getting it just for IRC is kinda... Eh. :/

And yes, I say this despite using my own Miranda for IRC, so I know that it's not that great compared to most.

I like this idea very much... but I'm not sure how far I have to step back to avoid the new protection thingy they have added. :/

Personally, I'm running on 6.2 just fine.

I think it was 6.3 when it started getting more intrusive? Not quite sure.

Huh?

I started mIRC to check my version... except this time I could get past the popups... this is just weird now. o.O

Guess it solved it self after all! V_v;

Sorry for being a pain yet again...

Pretty much, this. I've tried mIRC, but nag screens. I've tried irssi, but it's... too complicated. I've tried hydraIRC, but I couldn't figure out how to drag a chat window out of the... window...
So, I'm stuck on Miranda's IRC, which does suck. But it works and keeps channels in a separate window.

What is bad about this? It's just a little nag you get at the beginning of loading the program that you get this. Sure you can't continue after a very short period of time, but once you get passed it you are good to go. It's still free. I don't see why people complain about this. Gotta make money somehow.

That's not what I complained about... last time I started mIRC the "continue" button was replaced by a "quit" button. V_v;

That's weird. I never had that happen to me before. I tried to see how many days I have been using it since I installed it and it did not tell me. Next time I get a chance I'll share it. (I know it's been over 10 months)

It doesn't happen, it just has a clever timer mechanism to fool people into thinking it won't let them start.

Khaled's intent is never to make it impossible to use, just more persistent in nagging.

Yes it does; it's just rare, and it only happens in 6.3x. I've had it happen, like, twice. (I've been using 6.3x for... I think a year and a half now, just to give you an idea of how often it happens)

Anyway, you can just restart the program and continue using it like normal when that happens. Or you can use 6.2x.

I guess I'm lucky then, as I've used 6.3x since it came out and... no such thing here. Oh well, not like I couldn't register it anyway.

I can't remember what I did, but I managed to make it stop doing this. I think you just have to close/restart it a couple times.

The original plan for that was "... It's everywhere, as much as they don't want it to be"

I couldn't figure out how to make it sound good, though (until now)
