I would think this would be a lot more useful for, say, faster communications with space-traveling vessels than anything else, especially what with the huge delay already there.

Yeah, but isn't it point-to-point? I could see that getting prohibitive, and what if something happens to the facility holding the other end of the line? Your ship instantly loses all practical communication.
