Seems to be trendy lately to say that "print is dead". I don't think it is, but I think its uses need to be redefined.

I don't read the newspaper anymore -- I read my news online -- but I do still very much like books and novels.

Print is still much more tangible than digital media. You can feel it, watch it reflect the light, smell it. The colour proofing doesn't change -- it's the same -- not like on a monitor when it could be anything. The letters are smooth and beautiful.

I don't think print is dead. I think the newspaper will be though...

Definetly not. At the school the only sourde of news we get id from newspapers since our school can't afford cable TV So we just or about 60 news papers a day and make people share... (this is after the classes that need them are done with them)

Things like newspapers do, indeed, appear to be dying out. (Ever notice the amount of advertising gunk they put in them?

On the other hand, I doubt books and things are anywhere near dying. Newspapers have been largly replaced by radio (NPR, anyone?) and the internet. Case in point, look at the last Harry Potter release

I'd much rather pick up TIME or some other magazine than search the internet for news. My high school library had a whole shelf of magazines they refreshed every week. It was a nice way to waste 40 minutes of unused lunch time (I eat pretty quickly). Now that I'm at UCF, I don't think I'll ever see a newspaper or magazine again.

Newspapers: Probably, though you never know.

Books: Definitely not. I'm not going to carry a laptop/pda/what-have-you around in order to read a book (not even for the new Harry Potter book ) so my answer is a resounding "No".

Magazines: Probably not, I have 3 or 4 different magazine subscriptions (NP, EGM, CGW/GFW(curse you Microsoft!), some other mag) and lots of others probably do too. I could get this info on the internet sure, but I'm lazy (like most people) and would rather sit and read a magazine than go web-surfing for info.

Other Stuff: Uh...is there any other form of print...?

Newspapers are still strong around here, mostly due to it being home to a lot of older people that can't use a computer.

However, magazines and the like will still be in use, so print isn't dying out at all.

I don't think I'd ever read a story online, unless it's something only available online. When I do read something long online I dislike it because of scrolling, page loads etc. I like how with books you can jump into bed, prop the pillows up and sit there warm and comfy and read.

I don't know who came up with that rumor but print's far from dead. We haven't reached any pinnacle of human evolution to go beyond paper just yet...and even if we did I doubt it'd die. It's just been around long enough for people to enjoy it. That's why I figure things like radio will be eternal (and not necessarily just AM/FM, but SW, Ham, etc. because of enthusiasts).

The only thing I know is print's getting more expensive every day. NY Times went up another quarter just a few weeks ago.

Yeah, print will not die because we as humans enjoy cuddling up to a good book and not reading a ebook on a computer.

Truth be told, I'm not one for paperback more than on-comp, so that's debunked.

I'm just saying the universal means of conveying information, opinions, etc. will not die. That -is- paper. A convenience for -me- is that you can read this stuff on a comp because I'm there more often than not.

My news tends to come mainly from the internet, and I could see Newspapers atleast decreasing in size(meaning the newspaper companies get smaller and make less money, not the newspapers themselves being physically smaller) in the near future. However, I don't see how things such as books could die, you can't entirely replicate the reading of a book on a computer, and the biggest advantage of print is that you can still read it if the power or internet is out. I read many books, and can't see the practice dying.

When were TVs popular? Did they kill the newspapers? I think the newspapers will be fine, just like how snail mail is surviving, despite phones, text messaging, instant messaging, and e-mail.

Price rises are just part of society, there's really not much that can be done about inflation. I mean, look at Sim City 2000, in the really later years, the newspaper price goes up to "merely 5 dollars"

Also: paper book, ~$20. Handheld device to read it on, ~$150+ plus paying for the book itself (unless it's public domain). Then there's no guarantee it won't come in a stupid DRMed format that your device doesn't support, and you have to deal with batteries, screens that are hard to see in the sunlight, knowing how to work the damn thing, etc.
