I've never even fiddled with WGA cracks and workarounds.

My XP install must be in rough shape as a result. :\

Windows Genuine Disadvantage.

Simply don't install it, and you will be fine. For any downloads that require WGA, just google them and you'll almost always find them without needing to verify.

I had to install a crack for WGA on my XP SP3 VM, since it didn't think it was legal (it was from an HP OEM disc, so maybe that's why? I don't know the exact algorithm for determining whether a copy of Windows is genuine or not...) =/

Easy. It attempts to contact the Microsoft servers. If it can't, your copy of Windows is automatically considered pirated.

Very clever, huh?

So if you never connect that computer to the Internet, Windows assumes that it's pirated? If so,

We used to maintain multiple gaming machines that were never put online and often got their version of Windows changed. If you don't have wireless at home, it could be a pain connecting cables to all of them.

Not yet in Windows XP AFAIK, but since Vista it considers your version pirated if you don't have an Internet connection. And it's even worse there because Vista/7 actually lock you out of the computer if your Windows is considered pirated.

Also, does it check periodically? What if someone turns on a laptop in a place with no Internet connection and it happens to check and they're locked out?

Ugh. Such assumptions are bad.

iirc, can't you still do activation by phone, explicitly for people without said internet connection?

I would imagine that such a simple-minded check would cause considerably more outrage than ... well, what we've seen.

I think it has a grace period of 75 days or something. That should be sufficient for any laptops and such.

Remember when this thread was more active?

Its been a few days since the last post.

I would have posted something sooner but I had nothing to say about the topic on hand.

But that was on the 18th and I don't want to see dust pile up here.

It'll make everyone sneeze.

Then we'll end up with a huge mess.

And I'm not going to clean it up.

That's what we have noobs for.

If you really have that much trouble with WGA, just remember that a quick phonecall can most likely get you the keycode/whatever to get it set as 'legit.' If you really haven't stolen it, you have the right to activate it/be able to use WGA things, and the phone line is there for that reason.

My stuff works with WGA, but... I don't do any OS hacks and have a 24/7 internet connection, so I understand how it doesn't really happen for me but is liable to happen for others.

I've never had a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message on a real machine before, only in virtualization... =P

If my Windows 7 ever gave me that error, though... I might have to install a crack or something. =(
