IT'S ALIVE!!!

Sad thing is, this is entirely true. Ethics and religion, get your stance on. It's going to be a bumpy ride now that it's been done. Also, two major questions:

First, what happens when it escapes and runs amok? Answer: We all die horribly, cursing Venter's name.

Second, does this work cross the line where humans start playing God? Answer: We all die horribly, cursing Venter's name.

And, scene.

You tell him that he and his team succeeded in building a synthetic genome out of the chemical components of DNA - A, T, C and G - transferring them into a cell in order to control how it develops and multiplies.

It seems that it's not creating a cell from scratch, but using an existing one and replacing it's DNA...

Anyways, I didn't like the "Mad scientist".
IMO, that it's a great scientific breakthrough. Those guys have worked hard to achieve it, and it can have lots of applications in real life... I think they dont deserve being showed as "mad scientists"...

Not saying that they shouldn't deserve the credit either but the science is called that for a reason. Religions flip at this kind of stuff.

I, for one, want to see much more of this. The ethics with how it'll be used can be debated at a later time when the inevitable greed hits just like with anything anyways.

Ironically, just yesterday, John from Homestuck made human babies out of ectoplasmic goo.

I find the timing very coincidental.

Who knows what we could use this technology for... we could develop cures for diseases more easily if we keep doing research like this...

It's too bad our money-grubbing government insists on wasting too much of our money on the military and homeland security instead of environmental and medical research... =(

Yeah. They ought to know what can really stop the enemy: Killer robots and sentient superbeings!

We still might have some time to wait before this leads anywhere. Yes, he created a living cell with synthetically constructed DNA. However, he didn't make up the DNA or rearrange it himself or anything. This would proabably be the equivalent of deconstructing a motherboard and putting it back together. We still don't know any more about what the DNA does than before the experiment. However, it will open the gate for us to begin testing just what DNA can do. It could be a year or more before we see "scientist creates new bacteria with custom DNA that actually worked properly".

Yep. 1337 DNA H4X. It's that sort of thinking that's made me often consider getting into biology.
