EA Sports to charge used game buyers $10 to unlock basic online multiplayer

Basically, the original purchaser is bestowed online functionality, added features, and bonus content, out of the kindness of EA's heart (and a fun-to-enter redeem code), while a used buyer will get a 7 day trial of those things, and then have to pony up $10 if they want to keep at it.

Wow, how greedy can you get? Its not like resales hurt their income that much. They already received full price for the game many times over.

Good thing most sports games are trash anyway :specialed:

oh wait people actually buy those and then give them away/sell them along to their friends or whatever
EA is going to make millions off of this. Yikes.

So does some Socom thing. An additional $20 to play a PSP game online? no thanks.
Looks like I'll continue to avoid purchasing anything from EA. At least they have the courtesy to provide trials, so renters aren't totally screwed.

I can't even remember the last game that I owned that was from EA. I want to say it was back during the SNES era.

I'm actually rummaging through articles here to find one that shows most Gamestop sell backs are actually beaten sports games. I think it was from a customer survey that they got this info from, but knowing those, it's not the most accurate thing ever.

Oh is that how it works? I thought they were doing some game/console combination, since I was reading some complaints about how families with multiple children would have to pay several times or something.

This will definitely backfire on Electronic Arts... who I think are lousy too, much like Ubisoft (come on, need to stay connected just to keep playing a game? What if you're on dialup? Haven't they thought of that? =/)

The only somewhat modern games I play are Civilization IV, SimCity 4, and Pokémon... modern games have gotten too restrictive, and some can even install rootkits on your computer without your consent. =(

Next sony will be sticking rootkits in music.

oh wait.

Well this dl¢ thing is a really bad idea,
but not nearly as horrible as ubisoft's drm scheme

That was just stupid.

You know, it's funny how they never actually use their brain for anything at all. :/

If EA are so concerned about losing sales to used games then they should set up something like steams service instead, at least that works. (More or less depending on who you ask)

Well then Lunaria, I'd be glad if you found some way to make the steam variation work well with consoles.

Because frankly I can't see that happening. :/

I don't see how it would not work. :/

All current gen home system have internet support, and steam can run in offline mode after you register games online. :/

This will also work perfect on a system such as the DSi where as of now, the games are on the system they where downloaded to, and only to that. Regardless if you want to get one of the new DS versions that they keep pumping out ever year. :/

Just saying, I'm not a big fan of steam myself for several reasons, but it is a working system and it could adapt to consoles without some minor changes. At least, that's what I think.

They are also doing this for many games. I know BF:BC2 does this with it's maps that are in the new versions, but otherwise, you have to fork up money for it.

I personally think it's a good system. Although in some cases, it is kinda scratchy for cheap used game buyers.

I can see the reasoning behind it, just like charging for baggage on airlines or toll rodes. It doesn't mean I have to like it. But as someone else stated, I don't play EA games that much. I had 1 of their sports games a while back, the original BF on PC, and the Lord of the Rings games. Thats it for my EA history.

Ubisoft is considering their own.

Now, THQ is doing this for a 5 dollar charge.

Warning: Incoming trend!

Issue 1: Used games cost almost as much as new games, plus you can't buy all the content from the same person giving room for more pain in the arse work. If a used game cost as much as a new game with less quality, what's the fucking point?

Issue 2: If you buy a game used you might buy the game much later then when the game came out, and charging for online support for them then is silly as they will drop the servers for the games eventually anyway! V_v;
