Smells?

Am I the only one that this happens to? Just yesterday I walked in to the elevator and the smell made me flash back to playing Pokémon cards way back in 2001 at the Batcave card shop off of Flamingo and Eastern. I can remember every detail about it just from that one smell.

This also happens with music. But I know the cause of that... when I get a new song I'll listen to it 500 times in an hour and whatever game I'm playing automatically becomes associated with that song. For instance, Black Eyed Peas - Where is the Love reminds me of leveling my Jedi skills in Star Wars Galaxies, doing missions south of our custom built city called Insurgo with our guild Section 8.

The mind is a funny thing.

Nostalgia is a funny thing and I've experienced it before.
- visual: none at all. Unless I... manually induce memories? That sounds pretty dumb, but I'm not sure how to word it.
- audio: yes. Actually, I have a bunch of midis saved here from a site that I used to visit when I was little that are pretty much nostalgic to me.
- ...smell: I've recognized a few smells that were, like, "I know this... now... what does this remind me of...", but I usually don't figure it out.

There's one song that always reminds me of the city in 1998, for some odd reason.

Songs that came out during a particular time period sometimes remind me of that time. Also, 1960s songs often remind me of my childhood, as my mom would listen to them even though it was actually the 1990s

Memories happen to me from visual stimuli a lot, actually. Like, I'm currently in the house I grew up in, and sometimes it feels like summer 2005 (the last time I really lived here) when I'm here, or sometimes even earlier times.

Nope, it's natural.

Yeah happens to me pretty well with smells, and music; I can pretty much recall in my head like I'm actually there, sometimes scarily so. Like, I'll completely block out senses and just be back pretty much... Not so much visuals I guess... More of an automatic recallection of the object and memory.

Way back in 2002, my parents and I had the opportunity to revisit the house I lived in when I was really young that we left in 1990. Most of my memories of that place are scattered and flittering, and the more concrete ones are from a videotape, but it was amazing how much flooded back to me when I entered that house.

Pretty sure I heard this remotely proven back when I was in high school...but also taste as well. Not sure what that extrasensory deal is about but I think there's a great amount of limitation behind it as well.

It's just like certain things that happen, if you make a pit in your head to really remember something, you'll remember it.

This also happens to me sometimes with a certain feeling. Like, I've lived in so many different houses and each one had its own feeling... if you know what I mean. Sometimes I'll have that feeling again and think my home is back to whatever house that feeling goes with. That ones harder to explain I guess.

I get this all the time with songs! When I first heard "Dreams" by the Cranberries in 1993, I immediately fell in love with them... in fact, I still get the same feeling whenever I hear that song today as I did in 1993. =)

I even close my eyes every once in a while in one of my local Kmart stores, and I feel like I'm in a Kmart back over 20 years ago, even before I started elementary school...

YES! Totally!

Everytime I enter a house/building with a smoker in the family, immediately I think: smells like Zelda/Mega Man 3!

Why? because one of my brother's friends back in the early 90s had a bunch of games that we used to play in his basement most of the time. His house reeked of cigarette smoke(dad and mom were chain smokers).

Also whenever I smell diesel, I immediately think of India or Pakistan. When I smell mangoes I remember a particular room at my uncle's house in Lahore...

Also plenty of other indescribable smells take me back to India. And when I'm there(like this past summer), all those familiar smells return to me and I feel incredibly comfortable.

Music.

Smells, not so much. At least I've never noticed it.

As we always compare the present with past events, it's no wonder many older people just don't like 'newer' things a lot. Besides lacking the knowledge, it is quite hard time to adapt to those changes later, when your life went like on rails and you refused to accept some changes in world.

For instance soundtracks from movies like Star Wars, Matrix or Resident Evil are memorable for me; but as I watched the movies (got the first Matrix' OST right after seeing the trailer - even before watching the movie the first time, after I heard two awesome songs from that) and connected those with certain events, fell in love with music like that.
When I'm in Croatia at my grandmother's house, that smell from haymaking and other 'natural' things often remind you about your holidays as a child there, too. And as most holidays were relaxing and fitting, this is a 'good' feeling (aside from that, smells like fresh, wet grass is welcomed by many people, though). Although this also might the fact, that many of use live in big cities which lack nature. Computers, many electronic devices - nice, but to see cows? Walking the grass barefoot (don't step on bees that way, it hurts )? Invaluable personally and a nice temporary change from a big city.
Or think games. A nice song, although not too memorable soon becomes your favourite in the game, associating the event there. Think Dullahan's boss battle music from Vagrant Story, sounds like from a 70s horror movie, but it is incredibly catchy. Or a piano- and percussion-heavy track when fighting the first golem in the game. Pure awesomeness - but would it be that good personally, if you didn't play the game beforehand, too?

We still should not look back to the past only, as I think we should accept, or at least try to learn new things. Some are nice, others will not be liked, but still. It's always nice to find something new what kicks ass, what you didn't know before
