Well this could almost be expected.

Essentially, some of the top gamers in Korea threw battles for cash. Eleven of them. Three gambling companies are also under investigation.

So your SC is now nerdified gambling.

Seconded. I wouldn't feel so bad of being not that great of a gamer.

Kind of surprising though, that people are betting on StarCraft battles over there. I had no idea people bet on that.

Is anyone really surprised? I mean, I figure it would be easy to rig a game especially given how long these guys have played; they can make it seem like an honest mistake was made causing the loss.

Pfft, I'm sure most professional 'sport' is rigged to some degree.

Just so you know, only one or two high level players (one of whom is pretty washed out at this point) were involved. Furthermore, all the leagues took swift action in removing the cheaters and enacted rules (not announcing the matches until the show begins) which would make gambling a lot harder. I'm pretty sure they're all clean in the matter, and it's just the players who are at fault. Still, it's sad.

No matter what the sport, you can guarantee 2 things will happen:

1. There will be betting on it
2. There will be deals and payoffs for someone to lose

This time it just so happened with something I actually liked. I didn't know until the 2008 Blizzcon that Korea had a whole TV channel devoted to StarCraft. Then I saw some of their players in the finals at Blizzcon. They do stuff in 30 seconds that it takes me 5 minutes to get running.

There are actually two channels (OnGameNet and MBCGame), but they both cover a variety of games, with StarCraft being the flagship title.
