FYI if this turns into a flame issue or someone can't be mature about this thread and members' views, it gets closed. Just use common sense and don't be rude. We can debate and we have our own say but be respectful.

Do you attend? Thoughts?

I haven't been to church since I was around 9 years or so, save for a wedding in VA and one in Philly.

Heck, my own wedding wasn't even in a church.

I haven't been in church for several years now. Mostly because of a friend who kept on bugging me to go every single week. Needless to say I don't talk to him anymore.

However, if I do go into a church any time soon, it'll be to play their pipe organ.

Nope.

My family is Catholic, but my parents didn't raise me with any religion and I have rejected Catholicism. I believe very firmly that there is no god.

I briefly experimented with alternative religions when I was younger, but I realized that I'm not the religious type.

Haven't been since I was 19.

Around here, that raises a lot of questions admitting that, I notice. Agnostic here.

I've never been religiously in a church, because I'm an atheist (don't see the point). I've been in a few for the culture, though.

It's been a while. Parents are catholic but after I went to college I kinda... stopped.

At this point I guess the right word would be Agnostic

Haven't been since I was 14 or so.
My mom forced me to take classes after school at church so I could have Communion and Confirmation.
I always felt like church was a waste of a good two hours which could easily be spent doing other things.

Fits me, except replace "after I went to college" to "after I turned 5".

I would go with my grandmother if I stayed over at her house, though... the last time I remember something like that is when I was, eh... 12 or so?

I think, for me, it just got to the point where the more I went, the more I learned, the more I realize that something wasn't quite right about everything. Not just what I was doing but also other people that went and their particular reasons for doing so and at the same time their thought processes of others that didn't necessarily believe in what they believed and the opposite as well.

I don't care what religion or belief system you have, it's very important to check your facts once in a while and determine if what you're doing is really right or not. I eventually came to the conclusion, in that regard, that I wasn't on the right path here.

Whether or not that changes in the future, can't say. I have a feeling I'll still be asking myself the question enough times 'til the day I figure out if there's an afterlife or not. If I'm not asking and stay stubborn about something, nine times out of ten it probably isn't a good thing to be as such. At least taking the time out to verify that 'yea this is right' every so often works. For me, at least.

I go to "church", as its generally referred to, twice a week. My step-father is a pastor/teacher and we've been involved in ministry almost my entire life. Since my mom remarried anyway.

The problem is that church is not a building or an event. The word was derived from "ecclesia" which was adopted from the Greek to mean a gathering or body of people. It was not until Constantine was "converted" that the "ecclesia" started to become more about a location rather than the people. The pagan rituals and ceremonies of Rome were conformed to the message of Christ and thus Roman Catholicism was born, with their saints, clergy, statues, Mary, etc. From there, many religions were created time and time again from the fallout of changing beliefs. The idea of going to a "church building" would have been foreign to the early followers of Christ and the early "church" as they knew themselves. The early church was people living together, selling their possessions and sharing to those that had need.
Originally posted by Acts 2:44-45 NASB

The modern idea of "church" as a building and event you go to is far from what Jesus had planned for those who believe in him.

So I would not say I go to church twice a week. I would say I am part of the church and I fellowship with fellow members of the body twice a week. We don't even have music anymore, we just have a meal and my dad will teach for an hour or so and then some people share. Its not the same as all living together, but we don't structure ourselves as other "churches" do with a set amount of songs, greeting the people around you, prayer, "communion" with some crackers and grape juice, etc etc. We believe we are the church, wherever we meet is just a building to keep us warm or cool and out of the weather.

Last time I went to Church was when I was named. But neither of my parents care much for religion so I kinda never went in the first place.

I would like to add though, that I belive one could live by any ideals without going to a church/"Insert the same thing for another religion" to verify your beliefs. :<

As for what religion I go by, well, I'm a pastarian!

Nope, never been to church... even though my mom's side was Russian Orthodox and my dad's side was Catholic. =P

I consider myself an agnostic anyway (used to be Wiccan, then I dumped that religion. =P)

Was taken to church *once* by my grandmother (catholic, and believed very firmly I should have been one too), hated it.

I went back to church once for my brother's wedding, but that was it. I'm atheist myself, but I believe that people should have a right to their own religion, so long as they accept that other people are not bound by the laws of their religion

I haven't attended church for a while.. For those who are faithful, I don't believe that you must commit such an action just to prove yourself to be religious.

Parents are atheist.

Although my own beliefs are determined by the knowledge I have accrued--I am one of those scientists who are atheists due to what they know. The horrible things which run the universe and determine life as I know it generally overrule most religious ideas, with Buddhism being about the closest thing to a religion I find traces of reality in.

This is not without looking at the other religions; I have studied the bible in school, both old and new testament, and then some surahs of the Koran as well. However, my experience with these has shown me that the sides of these which I would more readily embrace were destroyed by others.

For example: Christianity was once divided between the current Catholics and Gnostic Christians. The Gnostics believed more in various things that ring more true to me than the pre-Catholic ideas that took over. Things like potential resurrection, the idea of knowledge leading to enlightenment, and Sophia (a woman) over the idea of Jesus.

But it was the Dark Ages and the non-Gnostics decided the Gnostics were heretics, and killed them off. This act of religious treachery is what more or less convinced me against investing in christianity; even though significant information survived of the Gnostics, all I see when I try to evaluate how christianity feels to me is the image of Dark Ages people burning the great library and Gnostics and Muslims, and it turns my stomach rather than enlightens me.

As for Judaism, I looked at it; it was a bit less invested in the destruction of all other sects, or so it seemed, until reading countless pages in the old testament which spell it out in bold print: "Destroy the Amalekites! Kill all of them!" ...Sorry. Genocide isn't holy to me. Nor do I want to have to do multiple ceremonies to make myself feel 'holy' when I feel more one with that feeling wandering among empty, natural places instead.

Islam; out of respect for those who believe in it, I will not even say much here, except one thing: it, too, has various things in it which do not appeal to me, and thus, is why I never really found it to appeal to me, either. But like the others, this is probably due to the culture I am in.

Then there's some other religions. I haven't studied them as in-depth, but I can give the similar answer to the others. Variously, I have found that most of the multi-deity religions of the ancient times remind me more of an episode of Stargate SG1 with the aliens posing as Gods; that is, the non-monotheistic things seem to trend towards human personalities playing the act of God, and seems to be more of a projection of various people's selves and real world events rather than trying to solve the big questions with something truly 'above' it all.

Although many of such religions have a rich and interesting history, they aren't for me either. Besides, people would stare at me all kinds of strange if I believed in the Olympic gods or something. Then I might have to sue the makers of God of War for their blasphemy. :p

So, in the end, I am an atheist, who lives by science as religion. Reality is defined by atoms, forces, and random chance. Mathematical equations and computation logic are my holy scriptures, for these can be used not only to understand reality, but manipulate it in ways above that which is normal. Above all, I cannot deny the power of science, as I sit here absolutely surrounded by artificial objects. While I reject materialism, the between-the-lines essence of the scientific laws more or less show me how it is.

...Although for morals I borrow from a mixture of the schools of Ethics, from the one which states "I must do only what I could live in a world with everyone else doing in the same would be okay" as well as some of the theory of working for the greater happiness of everyone.

I hold myself to a rather strict standard, not drinking alcohol, smoking, cursing, even reduced caffeine intake. I don't know why, either, I just do it out of habit. I find curse words to be meaningless and have found people to react more to the other ones when I'm really angry. Heck, just ask those SM64 people on Youtube who are seemingly terrified of lil' ol me.

In any case, I have just stolen 15 minutes of your life. They're all mine. Mine! Mwa ha ha ha. ...Meh.

My dad is VERY active in the church. Me, barely at all and that isn't likely to change. I have nothing against church in general, and I have no problem going if I am invited by somebody and I have nothing else planned that day, but I mainly go as an educational experience. My dad's particular church however, I only go to once in a LONG while as a favor to him under special circumstances. I've had WAY too much experience with that church, and in general, it's just messed up.

As to what exactly I believe, I'm still determining that for myself, and likely will be until the day I die. I was raised Christian, so I still have a lot of strong Christian ties, but frankly as time goes on, I realize that I'm increasingly agnostic. In fact I am definitely more agnostic than Christian, like probably a 80/20 blend so make of that what you will. Ironically this questioning of faith came about the day I decided to actually start READING the Bible! I went in with a certain set of beliefs I had long held, my own view of Christianity that I believed the Bible supported. However, I soon realized that the Bible was nothing like what I believed, so I began "studying" it in an attempt to understand where I place myself regarding theological matters.

I am currently studying the origins of Christianity as well as other religions and ancient history in general. Basically, I go in with a Christian perspective, or my previous perspective wherever that falls, and as I uncover things that I consider reason enough to dump certain beliefs, I do so. But if the evidence presented does not entirely convince me that a previously held belief is false, then I maintain that belief, even if I do put it into a new context. The main reason why I have not declared myself to be fully agnostic is because I find that this perspective actually helps me to examine the evidence in a more objective and impartial manner. If I start assuming that all of Christianity is false, then that is all I am going to find in my studies, making the studies themselves useless.

This actually happened the same for me as well. That's why I mention the 'question beliefs' bit.

Or perhaps ignorance is bliss? Who knows.
