I am proud to say that as of this Saturday, I am now officially a college graduate. I have graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in English, and a concentration in Creative Writing.

Now if only I could find an audience for my poetry...oh wait, that's what getting a Master of Fine Arts is for, so I can bore people to death with it in college classrooms. :p

Congratulations

I graduate this semester too, with a computer science degree. Assuming the school doesn't badly fuck things up, which seems rather likely.

I'd rather write though, although I'm mostly interested in writing speculative fiction (science fiction and fantasy) rather than poetry. I'd be fine with a small living wage, I only went to college because my parents made me

I try to be. Thing is, I took this creative writing class last fall, and it really discouraged me from writing. We couldn't write "genre fiction" and the teacher was incredibly harsh, so that steered me away from writing for a while.

I recently started Chapter 1 of a story, I don't know if it's any good, but I may be adding to it in the near future and posting it.

Well I would love to read it. I enjoy reading other people's writing; it helps me grow as a writer. I have posted some things in the Writing forum if you want to take a look. I do a lot of General Fiction and Science Fiction and when I am in the mood, Fantasy. What is your story about?

Still a ne'er-do-well here...or at least in the education perspective. Initially I was going Computer Science, technical emphasis and it never went through all the way before circumstances caused me to move two states over and essentially get out on my own after going for about two or three years and coming just short of an Associate's.

Although, in my absence, I've at least gotten to the point where I've got some major experience in the field I was wanting to go into anyways...or at least well enough. Going into my fourth year at this particular place I'm in and the experience has been invaluable...so at least I've made the most of what I've got. Some college grads don't even get that much if they don't have the internships underneath (always a good idea).

Eventually, I'll be back in to finish it up and get some extra letters after my last name. It's just a matter of when at this point.

Ah, another English major.

I have enough to get an associate's already, as well as potentially an associate's in archaeology and anthropology, though my main field is Computer Science.

I write semi-prolifically, as my roleplaying is there primarily for me to write. 400+ chapters and going on my main IRC RPG... archiving all the work takes forever but, it's pretty neat to be able to see the evolution of my writing across 6 years.

I'm graduating next spring as well, Computer Science with a minor in Math.

I respect people who get English degrees because it means you're willing to stand on principle and do what you love. If I was that strong I'd probably double major Math and World History. Computer science is just what I'm good at.

Cap-tossing wasn't allowed when I graduated high school. They were threatening to take back diplomas if people did it... Funny when 99% of the people in the auditorium threw their caps anyway! Not much they can do about that, I'll tell you what.

Anyway, congrats on college!

That's me next semester. One of the classes I need isn't being offered.

Yep, in my case I have:
- A class I got an Incomplete in last semester that still hasn't been updated with my final grade
- No permanent address to send stuff like my diploma, as I moved in April and will move again in June
- A legal name change unrelated to marriage that occurred in March
- Complicating the above 2 things, much information is duplicated across several databases, so the old name and many old addresses are likely lurking in odd corners
- I can't physically go to my school right now if I need to, as I'm stranded in my parents' rural village without my parents and I can't drive

My school isn't very large, so I've had scheduling issues. They assume that everyone fits some typical student profile in certain ways such as always starting with a fall semester, living with their parents in summer and not taking classes, never dropping or failing any classes, and of course having a personal automobile to take to and from class (this is the Motor City, after all). Some classes are expected in a particular semester (fall or spring) and if you take them in the "wrong" semester, there are fewer options. Some classes, especially in the computer science department, are only available in the evenings after the buses stop running, so since I didn't have a car, sometimes I had to pay $13 for a taxi home during the winter when I can't ride my bike safely. Twice a week.

And now some hurdle may delay my graduation I just E-mailed that professor who's class I have the Incomplete in, so maybe I can get a grade.

Yeah, you're correct. Right in the Gray/New Gloucester area. Fucking hate this town. Nothing to do, too far away from the bars in Portland...

There's a lot of schools doing that now (glad I graduated long ago) for some idiotic reason.

Hell we tossed caps and went for the silly string. We were fuckin' stoked to get the heck out of there.

Their "logic" behind it was, "Oh nooo, somebody could get hurt by one of the sharp corners!"

I doubt the legitimacy of this claim as they were made from the cheapest cardboard available and the corners weren't sharp at all.
