Not sure what to think about this.

So yeah, the Tories got in after all.

But the Liberal Democrats, the smaller party in the coalition that I voted for, have got key cabinet positions. Nick Clegg, who I saw give a speech outside Sheffield's City Hall on the eve of the election (where my graduation ceremony was held, and only five minutes walk from my home), should become deputy Prime Minister. I'm a bit disappointed that Vince Cable isn't going to be Chancellor, he is widely held to be the most qualified candidate for the post and far superior than George Osborne. Vince has a PHD in economics and is a university lecturer, whereas George Osborne is a career politician.

I'm also disappointed in no offering of proportional representation or single transferable vote - this would have strengthened the Lib Dems in the next election, and produced a much fairer election system.

I think this is the best result given the result of the election last Friday. I would've preferred a Liberal / Labour coalition, but the votes were just too stacked against it. The type of people phoning into the BBC's talk radio station today really suggested to me that people simply wouldn't accept it, or have too small a mind to understand it.

So yeah, a shit sandwich. But our man's in the cabinet.

So would this be a good thing or a bad thing?

One of my favorite quotes from Armageddon, by Lev "Iz thiz goud or bad?" I don't understand foreign politics either.

I believe that the Conservative Party in the UK is more like American Democrats than American Republicans, but don't quote me on that... (there's also the British National Party, which is like American Republicans... =/)

Yep, I'd say it's about as liberal (in some aspects) as northern democrats. I really hope the Libs do the coalition with the Conservatives, it shouldn't be so hard now that the Conservatives have agreed to a few of the Libs' policies.

Edit: Nick Clegg is now deputy Prime Minister, Cameron builds Conservative-Liberal coalition.

The Conservative Party is the party of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. They're a right-of-centre party.
They ousted Labour, which was the left-of-centre party of Tony Blair. It is true that our conservatives are milder than your Republicans, but they're still seen as the party of big business and the rich. They've also instituted such things as Section 28, which forbade the education about homesexual relationships.

A Conservative government is unlikely to be progressive socially, increases in funding to the NHS, breakthroughs in LGBT legislation and improvements to education all came under a Labour government. But given the result of the election, which made a Liberal / Labour coalition extremely difficult, it is certainly the next best thing. A minority Conservative government would have seen no Liberal MPs in the cabinet and no Liberal policies. So yes, it's a good thing given the election made Labour a non-option.

Probably all crackpot, of course, but I think the most interesting one was given that this is during a recession, when a lot of really nasty and upsetting cuts are going to have to be made... guess who gets to take the blame for those? The party in power. Which ends up resulting in (next election) people unsatisfied and voting for the other party. Short term loss, long term gain, I suppose?

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, though.

And yes, the Conservative party in the UK is... well, to put it bluntly, about as conservative as the average Democrat here. Britian in general is far left of us.

That's exactly the thing Labour were foreseeing. The Conservatives are about to undertake severe cuts in spending and are likely to face a massive challenge to their reputation. With Labour in opposition with David Milliband as their young, new leader (he's by far and away the favourite in the leadership contest), they could stand to win by a landslide if the Liberal Conservative government falters.

By that logic, that means that most of Western Europe will swing further to the left when elections come (since most of the countries are governed by center-right parties; Italy, Germany, and France immediately come to mind) - that seems possible, considering that was the case with Portugal where the Socialists won last year.

I think I heard somewhere that the liberals where making strides in France, too.
