I noticed this from my own actions and have seen other people do the same.

First off, in our cafeteria at work, we had open containers for plastic utensils. They were just sticking out of a small holder and you would grab what you needed. Now they have dispensers where you have to push down a lever to let one come out.

So I was walking away from the cashier going to get a fork to eat my food with. I noticed there was a fork sitting there already dispensed. I thought to myself, "It might be dirty, I'll just get a new one." Then pushed down the lever and caught it before it hit the other one and walked off towards the elevators. While on my way, I remembered that all the forks used to touch each other and I had no problem taking one then...

Just an interesting observation, at least I thought it was when it happened.

Yeah, humans are pretty silly. To be completely sure, you should be washing utensils every time you're about to use them. To be more realistic, well, how many times every day do people use those same utensils from that same bin without washing them and not get sick?

Its not even that, these are single use plastic forks, spoons, and knives. I'm not a germaphobe or anything, either. It was just a natural thought from seeing it sitting there. And the dispenser has a little tray that the utensils slide in to, its not like it was sitting on the counter or anything. Its amazing how your own mind thinks on their own sometimes.

The straw dispensers at our school always accidentally give more than one straw. I'm always afraid that someone might have "done something" to them, or sneezed on them, or something. I know it's a waste, but I'd rather be on the safe side and waste a couple straws (even though the probability of something bad like that happening is slim)
