In addition, he says that Playstations, iPads, and other electronic devices that can be used for both information and entertainment often distract us more than they enlighten us.

Thoughts? He seems to be saying that they prevent us from looking at information we should be, and instead divert our attention to less productive things.

I personally see it as a two-edged sword. True, some people can spend too much time gaming or visiting blogs and tvtropes and such, but at the same time you learn far more than you would from any textbook (whose information is limited and cannot be updated once printed). It really depends on the person and what they're interested in.

In addition, I don't really see how spending hours watching a tv is any more beneficial than spending hours browsing websites on an iPad. Sure, if you're watching a documentary or the news, it's beneficial, but you could just as easily get the same video footage over the internet. Likewise, both tv shows and the iPad can have equally non-educational uses.

And isn't the point of an entertainment system to entertain, not to enlighten?

Mentioned it on Skype last night. Didn't really get much of a response about it.

Honestly, that's about all I'm taking it for as well.

I can't wait until 2012, when we can actually have a better president... although I doubt Pelosi will run in 2012, since she'll be 72 by then... and it'd be McCain syndrome because of age.

Our best technology are video game systems?

Also, that's a nasty sick insult there. "Video game systems are a distraction". I bet those companies are feeling the burn.

he's a bad president because he realizes that video games can become the center focus of some people's lives and prevent them from leading more productive existences? Honestly, I know he may have used home consoles as an example but I personally know people who let things like WoW and the such consume their life. Yes, the computer is a great learning tool, but it can also be used as a distraction with things like this and I can easily see why that would be considered a problem. And quite honestly, I don't think its a bad thing at all that he's, you know, at least acknowledging it. A true bad president would probably not give a rat's ass.

I'd take a president who doesn't care for video games over... ....there's a lot worse presidents historically, seriously.

I admit that there are lots of people going "video games are evil" but here, seriously?

To me it just seems like he's going "okay, maybe we're using that kind of technology a bit too much"

I mean, how the hell did you guys get "VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD LOLOLOL OBAMA IS THE WORST PRESIDENT", from "Yeah, maybe we should teach our kids to turn off the Xbox once in a while"

Besides, I don't really play too many video games anymore, especially since I'm busy with other things, like experimenting with oddball configurations in VirtualBox and even with real hardware. =P

To be honest, I've been playing less and less games as time goes on. Sure, when the latest awesome JRPG comes out I drool like a sniveling fanboy but I never really take the time to sit down and play them. If anything, they're not a distraction for me but a moneysink because I'm a compulsive buyer when it comes to them.

What's really been taking my time is writing music and drawing! While some consider both a waste of time, I consider those people soulless wastes of atomic mass. They can go eat a dick.

The same can be said about a lot of things, there can be both benefits and downsides to them. TV (PBS Kids vs Nickelodeon), wine, chocolate, sports, medications, etc. Just about anything in excess can be a distraction. Its just that TV and video games are the most common activities nationwide that they're usually the ones being singled out for ridicule.

Notice he also mentioned iPads and iPods, which can be used for games but also for music which can help with creativity. And the iPad has many tools and apps and could potentially increase productivity. So I don't see these things as a problem. The lack of self control and restraint being taught to our kids is the problem, which unfortunately has stemmed from an age of internet and credit cards where we can get everything now. Thats a whole different can of worms, but ties in to this topic a little.

I just found it funny that he actually proclaimed the Xbox to be a tool of empowerment. Sure, the iPad could 'possibly' empower a man (Oh wait. No multitasking.), but the Xbox and iPod? The only reason they exist is for entertainment. I'd say next time he speaks on this, he needs to say electronics in general if he wants to make that statement work.

Except that the iPod touch can run the same apps as the iPhone (and probably iPad? don't quote me on that) so you could technically use it for productivity on the go as there are definitely apps out there not merely for entertainment purposes. Although I would agree that the XBox is far from...empowering? other than for maybe increasing e-penis size. its clearly an entertainment machine like you said, although I suppose there could be other practical applications for it as well...its not exactly a major selling point unlike with the iPod/phone/paperweight

In some circumstances, video games can actually be educational and teach skills that are hard to get elsewhere, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and cooperation/teamwork.

Then again getting any of those in today's twitch-shooters-everywhere-lol days is like finding water in southern Nevada.

I recall reading an article about a study that covered the cognitive effects of those games, and the results showed long-term positive effects. A different article explains how certain types of games improve vision.
