WiGig. Cisco's already on board with it. That would make 7Gbps possible for wireless devices. Also allows backwards compatibility with b/g/n devices.

I'm pretty comfortable with my 12 meg connection...so seeing this coming to wireless is a matter of 'do we really need it at this point' in terms of opinion. Probably nice for a backbone upgrade to use sometime down the road but definitely nothing we'll see of use in the next ten years.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Honestly, I'm more worried about range and reliability than speed with wireless. Even B is passably quick and I wouldn't mind those speeds if they could widen the range over a few hundred meters or even a mile or 2. Then it'd be reasonable for a company to set up a wifi compatible wireless network across a city or something, optimally considerably cheaper than cellular internet.

Another big thing they need to work on before bumping the speed up that much is to make most routers not overheat or crash or reboot or any of the stupid shit they do when you actually try to push a fraction of that speed, or just whenever they feel like because their software hit a bug and crashed.

I've been making do with just b, so this is overkill for me.

My router is g, I think. It's rare that I have to transfer large files between my computers, and when I do, it's never urgent.

I could see it being handy if you want to stream HD video or something, I suppose...

I don't mind using Wireless-G... since it's good enough for my handheld consoles, my sister's laptop, and the Wii anyway... =)

I have no need for anything like Wireless-N or this new 60GHz wireless...

And I remember when I thought 802.11b was blazingly fast. Of course, before that I had dialup

Later, someone installed an 802.11g router on the floor and I wasn't authorized to use it, but the computer would always try it first because it was the fastest connection. I wondered why one day, my Internet just wouldn't work at all.

The problem right now is not speed, as 300mb from Wireless-N is plenty fast. But when you put an encryption on that Wireless-N, it slows down to 130mb. I was disappointed to find this out when I recently purchased an N router. I had to first figure out what encryption type actually worked for N, WPA2 then come to find out it does not support the full bandwidth of wireless-N.

So if they can keep the encryption up to speed with 7gb, then I'm all for it. But they shouldn't tout that as the top speed with anyone with technical know-how will put an encryption on their network only to find its slower than an unprotected connection.

Yes. Forget faster routers, let's see stable ones.

The additional issue I have is that most of my portable equipment couldn't use this (or g, or even n) making it sort of depressing that eventually this will all be readily available, but useless for common devices like the Wii and DS.
