Taking a general concensus on what everyone thinks is the best. Building my computer may happen faster than I thought, so I felt the need to ask the question.

So what do people think? Which offers the best protection possible?

May I ask what a good router is?

I've looked mainly at D-Link and Belkin, though my brother likes LinkSys (I don't see a problem with that, either).

My D-Link does the job fine. Basically any that doesn't suck should have a built-in firewall.

Can't stick with AVG these days.

Switched to avast! recently due to AVG getting one fsck of a breach recently.

I use Kaspersky AV and haven't had any problems with it. I hear Avast is good, but I don't have any personal experience with it.

Edit: Well hmm, post 1000!

I've had my AVG go bad on me a few weeks ago and I had other reports of people getting the same thing. Whatever it was, it ended up making it to where AVG refused to open quickly (like 5 minutes worth of waiting on a single click). Got avast! installed and got the crap off it.

Eh, that's usually the way things go anyways. The scanner that gets the popularity is going to be the one most affected by viruses, which is why Norton sucks worst of all since that's what 80% of people have.

Okay, so back on the subject of routers, I now know that we're getting 7Mbit cable internet on Tuesday, and I wanted to know if anybody knew the fasted possible speed a wirerless router could be to get the most out of the connection.

Range shouldn't be a problem. If range were the only concern, we'd be able to make do with a plain Wireless-G, but since speed is now a rather large concern, we just wanted to know which would be best to get the most out of our connection speed.

So... any advice?

802.11g is more than fast enough to handle a 7 Mbps connection. Don't buy into the Wireless-N hype unless you actually have a home network and plan to transfer a lot of large files between the computers (besides, the standard isn't even finalized yet).

Get a Macintosh!

On Windows I can't say I really know anymore. At work we use McAfee Enterprise, which is fine. I can't stand the McAfee Home software though. Comparing the two is like comparing night and day.

I've never used Enterprise, but McAfee Home is total crap. It managed to fuck up my computer more than any virus ever did.

The "Enterprise" versions of virus software are vastly different to the "Home" versions. I believe it is a similar story with the Norton / Symantec solution too.

The Enterprise versions pose little to no problem with the Operating System, slowness, etc, they can be updated easily via things like McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator, very easy to manage, the end-user doesn't have to do jack shit, it all just works. It's really quite a beautiful thing.

And then there's the Home version which makes me want to cry.

Okay, so internet is hooked up here at the apartment, the connection would feel much faster if my computer weren't an AMD K6-2 300MHz POS, but it's all I can do until I get a job...

We settled on a NetGear wireless router, 802.11 Super G (108Mbps), and because this POS is running Win98SE, I'm not going to care about AV/FW just yet. I'm giving the free 60 days of Trend Micro Internet Security to my brother, since he's running XP Pro, and is 100% more susceptible to today's viruses than I am.

I think I'm going to go ahead and use Avast! when I build my computer. I haven't made any purchases yet, so I'm still open to suggestions regarding an IS service!

All I need is a good NAT Router firewall and my own brain to prevent viruses.

And for computers I can't babysit, Spybot: S&D + Javacools Spywareblaster + Avast! Antivirus is a potent cocktail for preventing infestations.

Drag's Post #233
Does anyone have experience with Jetico's firewall?

Once I graduate from college, I can't use the antivirus they require us to use anymore, so first, I need a good antivirus. I was thinking of using AVG, but considering what Hiryuu just said...

I had Norton Internet Security, because it came with this computer, and I had to uninstall it for Symantec AV, which is what my school requires, so I was out a firewall that I felt comfortable with, so I purchased Norton Personal Firewall, because it's the only firewall I've ever used, so I have experience with it.

However, I'm going to eventually switch to something else, because everyone hates Norton, and I'm starting to wonder if I should still be using it. Only problem, I don't know of any free AV and Firewall programs that are any good.
