Seriously, moving house sucks.

On the 'weekend' I moved from Mitchell Park, Adelaide, to Maylands, Adelaide. By 'weekend' I mean it took me four days, I took Thursday and Friday off to move too.

On Wednesday I came down sick with a viral Pharyngitis too, so I was sick when I moved. Much of the time was spent packing boxes while feeling dizzy and nauseous. It was fun.

So yes, now I have moved. I don't know the area I am living in very well, I don't know where most of my stuff is, I don't have my internet service connected yet.

I am exhausted. I am disoriented. I am posting this from work.

I am on dial-up at home I hate it. Internode say that the port to connect to the DSLAM at my Telephone Exchange is damaged so it will be a while for me to get ADSL / ADSL2+. They say they may need to log it as a fault with Telstra.

Logging faults with Telstra takes forever. Telstra are lazy and incompetent. I also think they break things on purpose just to piss me (and everyone else in Australia) off. Telstra are evil.

I am cranky and I want to sleep forever and ever and ever. I miss the internet. I can't do a lot of things from work that I would like to do.

Every time I move house I have problems with Telstra, phone and internet. It's depressing but I consider it to be part of moving now.

The problem with ADSL services in Australia is that Telstra owns the infrastructure. Telstra own the phone lines. Telstra own the exchanges, the DSLAMs, etc. Any other ISP needs to ask Telstra to provision the line. And Telstra are anti-competitive and don't like to provision lines for other ISPs.

The dance is always the same...

I arrange my move, Telstra disconnect the telephone number from my old house. I move to the new house, the line is connected there. I attach my modem. I call my ISP to advise that I have moved and ask for a status update. They call back and tell me I cannot get ADSL.

I call Telstra and Telstra tell me I *can* get ADSL and they attempt to sell me Telstra Big Pond (their ADSL/"Broadband" service). I call my ISP and tell them that Telstra did that. My ISP investigates.

Days later I get told that it's something to do with 'codes' or a 'faulty port' or a 'line fault' and that I cannot get ADSL.

I call Telstra again.
Telstra try to sell me Telstra Big Pond again. They tell me that they cannot help me resolve my "problem" with my ISP and my ISP tell me that the problem is with Telstra. My ISP is at the mercy of Telstra. Telstra refuse the fix the problem but they are more than happy to try to sell me their own service.

I ask to speak to the complaints unit. They don't help. I call the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

The TIO are my friends. The TIO call Telstra. Suddenly Telstra are magically able to provision the line for something other than a Telstra Big Pond service. Suddenly my ISP is able to provide the service they did prior to my move.

So, weeks later I get my ADSL connected.

I hate moving because I always get stuck in the back-and-forth between Telstra and my ISP (currently Internode). And I nearly always have to escalate it to the Ombudsman.

....

And here I thought just getting ADSL activated in the first place is a pain in the arse. Thank god for the Ombudsman at least. :/

Thank you for reminding me why I avoid Telstra like the plague. All I can say is that it's a sucky situation and there's not much us mere citizens can do about it.

Probably are. The tricky part is that the Government started this monopoly...

Hm... so it's like AT&T pre-breakup, then? (Though at least AT&T's monopoly was removed before DSL)

I think so? I don't know. Were AT&T regular jerks just because... that's... their thing? If so, yeah, sure.
