I also noticed that the logo seems slightly modified. The shadow isn't as pronounced giving it a softer feel. Its like looking at someone you've seen for years and then they slightly change their haircut. Takes a little to get used to.

Google may change many things, but a lot of people will still continue using their services. Think Youtube, people adapt to the new player (if they like it or not, as a lot of stuff is published on YT).

I like the design actually, for that left pane I would like it to be able to move on the right side/toggling it. But probably this would hurt Google's AdWords and other advertisement types - and if those got moved to the left side maybe, we had the same problem as before.
Whatever, this is another time the Firefox addon Greasemonkey kicks in. There are already some scripts for Google to remove the left sidebar, some don't work, but that one I installed removed it entirely:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76127 (requires Greasemonkey to be installed, every source can be checked before installing to prevent any suspect code; but usually there should not be even one bad script on that site).

I will still use Google as my default search engine, as well as a Google Mail account. Made this entirely for Youtube, really good web interface, although I have to admit _not_ using it for private messaging or services like eBay and such. The image search from Google still is very nice to use, but I would like to see some serious competitor to Google.

I have no complaints. In fact they see to have eliminated a problem that was driving me nuts: twitter updates showing up on the top of searches. You can click "Updates" on the sidebar if you want your tweets, but you aren't forced to scroll through them anymore.

I saw the thread title and thought "Oh god, not this fucking nitpicky bullshit again."
Then I read the first few posts and was pleased to see that it wasn't.
Then I read the next few posts and saw it deteriorate into the same old bawwing as ever.
Shit changes. Deal with it. This is what stuff like Greasemonkey, Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper and Stylish were invented for.

Wow, you seem to not like anyone that prefers to keep things the way they like it... Not everyone wants something that works for them to be advanced in ways they didn't need. I know its asking for a lot for a search engine to not change, seeing how millions of people use it. But theres nothing wrong with wanting to to stay the same.

Yea, I don't see a change.

It kinda feels like everything's scrunched into the middle column now, but it's entirely possible that it was that way before, and I'm just getting thrown off by the fact that the results don't start all the way on the left anymore.

Aside from that, I don't really mind, just another thing to readjust to.

Yep.

Now I do notice a few changed made to YouTube and I don't mind it at all.

Eh, it's not bad at all, except for the left sidebar throwing me off every time I search for something.

I'll probably get used to it after a while.

Meh, It is fine with me. Doesn't really change much, except for getting rid of some empty white space that they had on the right side with the old layout.

The only the I have a problem with is the redundancy of the sidebar with the top bar. Maybe they should make the top bar for Gmail and IGoogle purposes only?

I'm not really a fan of the sidebar, but it's not terrible. Definitely reminds me of Bing.

I do, however, take issue with the new buttons. What's wrong with letting the window manager handle themeing of basic controls?

Also, the Google logo looks funny without an obvious drop shadow behind it.

The new google logo is actually pretty nifty.

The old one looked like it was a metal sign hanging from the side of a building or something, but the new one has more subsurface scattering, which makes it look like it's made out of plastic.

Or it's a jelly candy.

Either way, the brighter colors make me happy.

It's alright. I'd just like to he able to toggle it when I'm logged in or move it to the right. Also I liked the blue bar between the heading part and the results. Now it's a bit too sterile and bright.

I never even see the main page because i always use my Google Toolbar for searches. The sidebar is different but I'll get used to it quickly enough.

...oh wait, that would be a good thing...

Our school LOVES to use Bing as a search engine. On the MicronPCs they have in a lot of the buildings. (There are plenty of Dells, though, and the T building is full of high-quality classroom PCs, so maybe there's a reason to that)

I want to kill them on both counts, though.

I'd like to direct everyones attention to http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all

as well as http://www.tweakguides.com/GC_1.html for removal of the sidebar in the new layout on your flavor of browser.

That's great. It seems though that they removed the Language Tools link even from there.

But just for the old design, I'd use that one.

Paulguy's Post configuration
For those who want the resultStats bar the way it was:

#cnt {

max-width: none !important;
}

#subform_ctrl {
margin: 8px !important;
max-width: none !important;
min-height: 0px !important;
padding-top: 1px !important;
background-color: #5659d2 !important;
}

#resultStats {
background-color: #e1f0f8 !important;
padding: 2px !important;
}

.s {
max-width: none !important;
}

Also makes better use of horizontal space which I prefer.

Kill ads:

#tads {

height: 0px !important;
max-height: 0px !important;
overflow: hidden !important;
}

#rhs {
width: 0px !important;
max-width: 0px !important;
overflow: hidden !important;
}

Only works on the Web results page.

I know some of this is redundant and can be reduced and blah blah blah, but it's mostly formed out of experimentation.

Same with me. Generally, the only time I access the main page is if I'm testing my Internet connection with a page that's almost never down

Of course, this often makes me miss out on special Google logos, too, but occasionally I'll check them.
