Who knows if this will ever hit the market before something else one-ups it, but it sounds promising... just as OLED did. It has to be more affordable and cheaper to produce than OLED though, that will be the key factor of whether or not it makes it to main stream.

Yea, it's about the same thing as when Blu-Rays hit and then were claimed 'the choice' of the format war with 25/50GB (and greater with more layers) discs only for an HVD to surface with 3.9TB of capacity.

All a matter of cost at that point.

Still, nice to see that much of an efficiency improvement. OLEDs were a nice jump in that technology as it was.

Someone made a comment that the current manufacturing process would cost roughly the same as producing microprocessors. "imagine a 50" core i7, not so cheap". Probably not as expensive as the 150" gigan-TVs out there, but close to it.

Does anyone else remember this vaporware prototype? It's too bad it turned out to be a fake, because it would have been cool to have something like this back in the day... =(

Edit: And once again, how long will it be before 2160p gets squashed by 4320p? I'm expecting a similar thing with that, and surround sound (9.2 vs 9.1; I'm expecting 9.2 to be the winner here, since two LFE channels sound better than one. =P)

I don't think we'll see 2160p (also called 4k) be the next standard. It's overkill for screens that fit inside a house. For monster size movie screens, its useful though.

3D TVs were all the big news makers at CES 2010 and I think manufacturers are going to be stuck on that for a few years. Next will be more web integration with TVs and moving on to the next standard, such as OLED/OLET or whatever else is created in the next 4-6 years.

They were testing 4320p back in 2006 in Japan. That + 22.2 audio is ridiculous.

I guess eventually it'll all just be 3D vector graphics and procedurally-generated sound. Though I have no idea how you'd go about recording that from real life.

Or maybe we'll just have 654876580p and 255.6 sound when we retire.

I would think after all this 3D TV stuff comes holographics. Its in the works and I'm sure it'll eventually become reality.

Holographics are certainly interesting, but they can't really provide a true immersive experience. You have a 3D model in front of you rather than around you. I expect some sort of headgear that basically puts a small HD screen right in front of your eyes, tracking your head and eye movement to provide a realistic virtual environment. Then from there the natural step is to tracking full body movements, and detecting them while somehow preventing them from actually being performed, and you have virtual reality. Find a way to also override the nervous input (so you feel what you see) and it should be pretty much indistinguishable from reality...

I'm going to make that someday, dammit.

One could always cheat; if the brain can be fully interfaced with, one could just replace their organic body with a mechanical one, thus also making it a joke to access virtual reality.
