~7:30 PM
Mom: "Up for going to grandma's?"
X: "What for?"
M: "Something's wron gwith her computer."
X: "Oh?"
M: "She says she has no icons."
X: <<It's probably problem with hiding icons>> "I guess..."

~7:50 PM
Grandma: "Well, some box came up asking if I wanted to install a toolbar... I wasn't thinking right and I hit yes, and it asked me if I wanted to configure it, and I said no..."
X: <<Oh, no.>>
G: "It said something... I had your aunt Pam come down and she deleted it"
X: "You probably should've asked me first."

...

~8:10 PM:
Explorer crashes on startup. No taskbar, no nothing. IEXPLORE gave an error when I ran it about some missing AOL file (probably homepage), but... yeah.

Spybot returns nothing besides some tracking cookies, but there are a lot of odd DLLs running at startup through system.ini (tons of wllogon things, which I know aren't supposed to be there)...

Oy vey More to come as events warrant.

Next up: Getting HijackThis! and some other things.

Reminds me of that incident with my mother two days ago when she complained she wasn't able to connect to anything... when she had disabled the ethernet adaptor.

Sigh. Being family tech support sucks.

Wow, my worst issues arise from my parents thinking Microsoft Office XP is an OS.

Best of luck with that computer, X

"Lots of weird startup entries; oh well. Seems to be okay... hm, I wonder"

*Opens explorer.exe, reads error message"

Something about 'Deskbar.dll'. Hm...

*cmd dir deskbar.dll /s*
*regedit f3 deskbar.dll*

"Ah, it's in the AOL folder... hm, I'll try deleting the registry refrence."
*poif*

"May as well fix this too..."
*update AVG*

"Explorer runs again; I'll reboot and make sure, and let her make sure everything runs again... ah, here she comes"
> "I don't hear you getting anything done"
"That's just because there's no sound, but I'm pretty much done... go ahead and make sure it works, though."
> "Much better, they're all back now" *AOL.exe* *crashes spectacularly with "title/Topic" dialog box* "But AOL's still broken..."
"I bet Pam broke that when she tried to "fix" things... I'll go ahead and reinstall it for you."

*install Firefox, AOL (which takes forever)*

"Ok, mostly done; just make sure it's fixed how you want it (and ignore that crap at the bottom)"
> "9 messages... seems to work, thanks"
"Kay, I'll go ahead and pack up then and we can leave"

Gets a $20.

So yeah, that was a lot less painful than I was expecting (and all the more aggrivating -- thanks AOL!)... reminds me I still have my other grandparents' computer to fix

Oh well, this mission was a success, and that's what matters for now

I'd have just reinstalled Windows, but anyway... Why did she seem to think it was a good idea to start at 7:30? I guess she's one of those types that expects you to hit some magic key combination and type some letters and boom it's fixed?

Oi, my mom had to ask me why no images were showing up in Firefox. Well gee, maybe it's because you AdBlocked "*".

It sounds like your grandma's a whole lot more rational than your mother.

What I would've done... Hm... I'd either do what HH said, or I'd just shrug and say "I dunno".

Speaking of which, my dad's computer had no sound. He called me over, so I took a look at it. The speakers were hooked up correctly, and the volume knob wasn't in the "off" area. Went to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio/whatever it's called, and guess what? Volume bar = all the way to the left.

Well once malware has taken over you never know for sure just what it's fucked up. You might think you've fixed everything, when in fact some obscure system file is corrupt or security is compromised or another bomb is waiting to activate itself. Reinstalling the OS, you can be much more certain it's completely clean.

You know what's even better?

When a family member DEMANDS that you configure something in a way that isn't possible, and keeps getting irritated with you because you can't meet their unreasonable expectations! GEE, I'M AWFUL SORRY YOU HAVE TO CLICK A BUTTON TO SWITCH WIRELESS CONFIGURATIONS BETWEEN WORK AND HOME BECAUSE THEY'RE SET UP DIFFERENTLY, WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO CODE AN APPLICATION THAT DOES IT FOR YOU, LAZY MCFARTYPANTS? OH, RIGHT, YOU OWN A MAC, YOU'RE SCREWED!

I hate how family is always so shy on giving money. "Oh you worked on this for five hours, you get this $20 bill!", and since it's family it's hard to argue; it doesn't even fucking meet minimum wage. If it's anybody else I could easily get $400~$500 for that amount of time.

I love computers.

My step-grandfather seems to serve the role of "family pain in the arse" when it comes to computers. My brother is more incompetent, sure (he spywared up a computer that isn't even connected to the internet) -- but nobody can match my step grandfather in being a demanding pain in the arse.

My brother at least is fairly cheerful, friendly and grateful when he fucks up his computer beyond all recognition. He might not necessarily give me any money, but the pittance I get from my step-grandfather is not worth it for the bullshit he puts me through to get it.

I generally don't fix our family's computers, since the only problem we have is here, with the router (which a quick firmware upgrade fixed)

I got a call one day where my Aunt could not connect to the internet.

Went over, her IP was like 0.0.0.0

Not to mention Windows was unregistered.
