Wow, this is going to have repercussions for years to come like the Exxon Valdez spill.

I doubt it'll take long to hear about it here once it starts making its way up. We'll probably hear it from Louisiana soon enough from up here further in Arkansas.

It's hit the short. And now they're confirming that it may eclipse the Exxon Valdez spill in terms of damage and spread. Such a shame. Hopefully more efforts will be made to prevent such a catastrophe as this with future oil platforms. I'm in no way against them, we need more localized fuel sources, but it just sucks when this happens and our wildlife has to suffer the most.

I had a feeling this incoming storm I'm about to get through this weekend would have some sort of effect one way or another. It's been raining practically every weekend since the turn of the year down south so it's a good bet that it's going to keep getting worse and worse as the weeks go by.

The worst part of this spill is that the oil well is still open at the bottom of the sea floor. It could be for another week, its such a same. I'm not against oil companies in any way, it really is the lifeblood of our civilization as we know it. I just wish there was more that could be done to fix this.

So you're not against obscene profits, complete disregard for the environment and the future of humanity, and actively blocking new energy regulations and technologies, all in the name of the almighty dollar?

I won't deny oil's positive role in the development of our civilization, but now that cleaner, renewable technologies are either readily available or are in active development, there is no reason we should continue to rely on it and the companies that are shilling it to keep our civilization running. It's a dead end, no matter how you look at it.

I guess saying "in any way" was being too broad, since I would agree they make considerable profits from their trade. But making money isn't necessarily an evil thing and oil production is not the only market that basically sets their own prices.

I can understand going green with public sources of energy for power plants and other harvesting sources. But for motor transportation, switch off of oil products is not in the foreseeable future. There are too many cars out there and not enough money in people's bank accounts to make any sort of mandatory switch any time soon.

A good tax credit for buying new hybrids/electric cars would go a decent distance to fixing that, especially if combined with other incentives.

Say what you want, but gas prices are only going higher... One way or another you're going to end up spending that money.

The problem is that electric cars have a very short range (70 mi max last time I've heard) and they're not exactly renewable either, since they need Lithium which, guess what, is going to run out in the next 40 years.

A better idea would be a public transport which deserves its name.

In case you've forgotten, we've developed cars that run on compressed air that produce water and cars that run on water that produce air. Electric is not the only other alternative we have.

Algae fuel all the way! Not only would we have a renewable fuel source but we could harvest algal blooms that harm the environment for fuel! Kill two birds with one stone.

Apparently hair, tires and golf balls are being used to clean up the mess now.

I think only the cement option will work, as this is clearly an out of control nasty mess.

I want to be wrong on that but have yet to have reality prove me such. Let's hope I'm wrong anyway.
