Halo 2 lives on

I foresee another news story soon regarding Halo 2... "14 teens found dead after their Xbox exploded for being on for 211 days straight"

This is why I hate xbox. You have to pay to play games online. Then they can decide to not support them anymore and you're left with a paperweight disc.

Except that Xbox Live is the best online service you can get on ANY CONSOLE at the moment. For $50 a year, I love it.

Halo 2 was on the original Xbox Live system, and it'd be a waste of money to continue to support it when Halo Reach is around the corner and there are a lot of people playing Halo 3 still. Like me and friends have been doing recently.

And what? Halo 2 is years and years and years old, already outdone by Halo 3 and Halo Reach. It'd be foolish to keep the game servers for that up for the very few that play Halo 2. It was going to happen regardless, just like it happens to any games where you have to connect to their servers.

You're acting as if Microsoft is the first company to ever discontinue a server for a game.

Thinking more about it, I realized my statement was biased because I don't like the xbox. They are not the first ones to terminate a hosting server for a video game. I prefer to play my console games free though, since I already pay monthly for a PC game and I rarely use my PS3 for more than blu-rays. That is until Gran Turismo 5 comes out. Which will be free to play online, mind you. Just as every other PS3 game is Granted xbox live may have more features, but I don't really need them to play an online game.

I am not going to go into XB360 vs Ps3 online.....unless you want me to.

On Halo 2, damn that's a good idea. But don't they know they can just play the PC version online?

So, what, the disc ceases to function when online play is discontinued?

Edit: Your comment has a certain degree of hilarity when one considers that you play World of Warcraft.

It does, which is why I had to rephrase my statement. I don't like having to pay for console games to be played online. Especially when you may not play many games on it, but want get online and rack up a few frags from time to time.

The CD may not cease to function, but for some the sole purpose of playing a game like Halo 2 is for online multiplayer.

Quoting this because my brother borrowed Halo 2 from a friend, and it has terribly bland single player

Most fun with Halo 3 though is the foundry >.> <.<

But yeah, MS will probably pull the servers sometime here
unless they're just leaving it up to see how long those people blowup last ...

Yeah that's why Friend Codes are sooooo good.

Keep in mind what you are buying is access to getting exclusive game demos (360 is the only one with the Blur Beta), extra offers and contests ON TOP OF a very well put together friends list, party system, and many other benefits. Live requires servers to connect to in a HUGE way, so there has to be some form of payments lest you want features removed.

Personally, I wouldn't want the party system to be trashed just to have it for free. I'd much rather be able to join a party with friends while I'm in the middle of a game, finish up what I'm doing, and in a few button presses be able to join in their session without having to use a secondary communication method to join in.

Sometimes yes.

My video card came with a game called Tabula Rasa, some sort of online MMORPG-shooter hybrid. Apparently, the servers were taken offline either before or very shortly after I purchased said card (guess the game didn't do terribly well?), and the game cannot be played at all without access to the servers. So in my case, I have a disc that ceased to function before I even put it in the drive.

The servers were online for a little over a year. Pretty weak if you ask me.

...Um.
That's an MMO... In other words, that's how it's supposed to function.
I think it'd be a bit ridiculous if you caught me complaining about, say, the Pangya servers going down permanently one day, considering that that's how it's supposed to work.

A lot of games though are designed with online multiplayer in mind, and have a lame, short, boring single-player mode bolted on.

Ideally, any online game should release the server software (and preferably its source) when the official servers are shut down, if not before. But then we wouldn't have to buy another shiny disc to keep playing almost the same thing we've already been playing.

Early releases and exclusives on Live. But that's only because Microsoft pays devs off.
Oh well...

Speak for yourself. I for one found Live back in 2005 or so to be far superior to PSN of today. Your milage may vary, but I'll be honest in that there really is no console-based substitute for what Live does.

Though I won't disagree that Microsoft's policy on DLC/updates is incredibly silly. Remember, you can only have 1000 Gamerscore points per game, and if you want to have more, fork out the cash!

(Reminds me, I wonder if the InhumanMuffin account still exists.)

Here's an incredible option that will help if bad teamwork is involved: CHANGE IT TO GAME CHAT

You'll even stay in the party. Just be chatting via the game!

Also I don't care if there is ONE game that proves to be an exception for a console, but the god damn Wii's online service is a complete fucking JOKE. In order to be friends via console you have to share codes. In order to play a game you have to... share another fucking code for each game.

It's downright retarded and makes playing games literally impossible without outside communication.

Also Avatars are awesome because you can customize their wardrobe with relevant game items, which is pretty cool.

All this talk about xbox Live and PSN are moot, because soon the revamped Battle.net > all!! Muahaha!

On a side note, as cpu stated, the Wii online interaction is a joke. But I think the Wii is made more for group play in your own home instead of online play.

I believe that's really the purpose in this. They've designed it to be more geared for family and friends than for playing random people around the world.
