I remember, and miss fondly, the days of "CD key:".

DRM is just going too far, and in cases like this, it's much more likely to take away from the enjoyment of a game if you have to fight with the software to get it to work...

There's a difference between Copy Protection and DRM? Could've fooled me.

Edit+: On that note, I fail to see how making yourself show up on rootkit scanners, installing hidden registry keys everywhere, and then requiring you to reverify after the slightest hardware change is not invasive.

The rootkit is with the USB fingerprint scanner, not with Bioshock. It alters the kernel to hide files just like the last one did. And yes, Bioshock's "protection" is DRM.

even if we all hate it, we are a minority, so if we boycotted it, the average (...stupid, unpolitically motivated...) people (the majority by far, especially in the US) will not participate with us.

companies care about making money -- they don't care if they lose users like us, we bring in barely any of their income. The gaming market is so mainstream these days, its geared towards popular/normal people rather than the nerds it used to serve.

For me to enter my company's VPN network, I have to append a six-digit code to the pin I already have. So, CD-Key + PIN + RSA Code should help the problem. I guess the draw back is that you can't lose the RSA code generator or something.

Or, we need fast enough networks where the program is stored on the company's servers and serviced through an internet-like browser solely used to play the game.

So yeah, Software as a service is probably the better approach

And what happens when a company goes out of business? What happens when 2K Games or SecuROM dies?

The advantage of "software" is that anyone can make an archival copy. There's no external factors; as long as the hardware and software are still in good condition, you can enjoy them as long as you want, trade them, whatever -- case in point, my NES still works after 15 years of joy.

But.... if playing something requires you to download or verify something from some arbitrary server, what happens when it dies? The game becomes worthless. There's no value left, any potential joy from it is erased and the game dies.

I don't know about you, but I am not willing to pay any amount of money (aside from token amounts, like $5) for something that will just suddenly stop working depending on something I have no control over.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to play legitimately obtained second-hand media like you can with normal software or home video releases. What if I went to buy say, Half-Life 2 for PC used from a thrift store? It'd fail the test and couldn't be played without using an illegal crack or serial generator. ____________________
