1) All the UI methods for disabling the Aero previews on the Taskbar are .. not working. I've tried them all and ended up having to create a registry key to delay the creation.. very hacky. (And they say Linux is hard to configure for an end user....?)

2) WTF is this Virtual Directory crap?!

3) Why the HELL does C:\Users\Username\Documents appear in Explorer as "My Documents" ....? This confuses my text editor and when coding, paths are very important..

Basically after spending hours configuring and disabling features I don't need/like and even features that are harmful to me as a user.. I'm left with a crippled version of XP.

*sigh*


I'm giving serious consideration to installing XP sometime tonight because this stuff is getting in my way on a daily basis.

It's also Microsoft.

And considering support will dry up in a few years for XP, if it hasn't started since October, I wouldn't expect XP to save you past the pokey virtual machine that comes free with Pro on up w/ 7.

I spent quite a bit of time getting my 7 working the way I want it since the beta. I doubt I change back just based on that fact (but I also dual-boot on my desktop as well).

Speaking of Windows 7, anyone know if Apple is working on making it compatible with Boot Camp? All thats listed is XP and Vista. I bet there is a workaround out there so if anyone could point me in that direction I would be most grateful.

Microsoft has deliberately sabotaged competition before (Windows 3 crashing on top of DR-DOS with a false error message, the original release of XP causing problems with QuickTime and RealPlayer, etc.) and it wouldn't surprise me if they're doing so again.

Except for the fact that Windows 7 ran well on my MacBook Pro even though it was unsupported.

I think the main thing to do is to first research how it runs on an individual model Mac before attempting it. On some machines it's fine but on others there are strange issues (especially on certain iMacs.)

I honestly couldn't begin to speculate as to why it's taking so long though. Possibly licensing issues or some device driver that is REALLY stubbornly refusing to work properly.

My university has an entire lab filled of iMacs dualbooting Windows 7. I don't know if they use the same software but still.

I've actually run both Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 SP4 on a 2007 Intel iMac... they say it's not supported, but I still managed to get both OSes up and running (98SE was a bit finicky, but I still got it working nonetheless...)

I would have tried DOS 7.1 and Windows 3.1 or Windows 95C, but that might have caused problems... =/

Although problem #3 exists in XP as well.

Support is meaningless, by the time something is unsupported hackers usually have changed targets to the new thing, newer things can be hacked to work for quite a while (perhaps even longer if you have a suitable enthusiast community behind it), and developers hesitate to leave XP out of their releases.

(Though with Microsoft Orca, you can hack .msi installers to work anyway.)

Though honestly after a point, I'll switch to Linux, as at the point where no more new supported stuff occurs, I'm gonna be relying on virtual machine-like hacks to keep my thing working anyway.

The top things I hate about Windows Vista (that Windows 7 doesn't seem to fix):

- Explorer's interface with screen waste that can't be removed, and bad/missing filesize display ... it's bad enough that I use an alternate explorer (or I'd run XP's if I could)
- winsxs (more like winsuxs) and its thousands of long named folders, and tendency to grow and never clean up, only to "fix" a problem that was never really there on XP
- more bloat than ever, that you can't remove (or disable) without resetting file ownership and permissions or doing other crap
- UAC, but I can disable that and forget about its existence

And probably more I'm forgetting, but using Vista for 3 years at work still isn't pushing me away from XP anytime soon I don't feel any need for the newer features, or even 64bit yet (3.25GB RAM is still plenty for me) ...

My computer would handle Vista's bloat (+ Aero) perfectly too, and Windows 7 even more, so it's not that


I don't really know what I'll do once XP (or 32bit) is no longer widely supported (probably before 2014, I'd give it 1-2 more years) ... I'll either be stuck with limited/older programs, update to Windows 7 (or later) by force, or switch to something else, but hopefully there'll be a better reason to switch from XP by then

I don't know why you think XP will only be supported "widely" for 1-2 more years since Netbooks are still being sold in mass with XP Home.

I've only seen ASUS netbooks being sold with XP since 7's release. It's usually 7 starter now.

Personally, I'd go for XP over 7 starter. Being unable to even change the wallpaper is stupid.

There's a few things coming up that won't run on XP (like Internet Explorer 9, not that I care though), and the usage share for Windows Vista/7/later will eventually (slowly) take over, but I guess it'll still take a while


I know at least 2000/XP became a common requirement (over 98/ME) well before XP was 5 years old (Vista is already at 3), and now it's XP SP2 or SP3
