Not sure if you guys are big on AMD or anything, but the 1055T and 1090T are in stock over on Newegg for 209 and 309 USD. Some boards have BIOS updates to allow the use of them, even in the AM2+ socket. My M3N78 Pro's not among them just yet but can at least go with a 965 BE.

Still, the benches on these things are pretty impressive. 1055T outbenches an i7 930, at least...which is 209 vs. 299 USD, at least...(course, that's 6-core vs. 4-core...but at least some people can upgrade to this from a far older system).

Cost-effective-wise, if you're looking to upgrade any time soon for your computer needs, I'd be looking within the next few weeks on the AMD end if it strikes your fancy.

I used to always buy AMD with my custom machines for the lower prices. I always wished I hadn't, too. The downside to AMD was always the FSB and cache. They just couldn't compare to Intel. When I had a 512 cache, Intel was pushing 1-2mb FSB was over 1024 and I was stuck sub 800

Not the case anymore. Those AMD definitely can compete and out perform some of the cheaper intel processors. It wouldn't stand up to an i7 980x but its not meant to. AMD was always the cheaper route but usually with a sacrifice. Now it doesn't seem like you sacrifice anything. Way to go AMD, just after I get out of desktops and buy an i5 laptop (which I'm more than happy with, coming from old Brisbane 2.1ghz processor).

Yea, these wouldn't hold up to a 980x but they're roughly 10% behind in the benchmarks versus a 1090/1095T, I believe.

And it's 309 dollars versus 1099 dolllars for the two of them (1090T vs. i7 980x). Nuff said, really, unless you're one of these kind of people that needs everything...ASUS Republic of Gaming boards or EVGA Classified boards...GTX 480 with READY FOR TAKEOFF fans attached...Mushkin Blackline DDR3 2000MHz RAM...highest end Intel X25 SSDs...1600+W PSUs, etc. etc.

At that point, go ahead and spend...but I'm not a rich man in the slightest.

Oh and those STOCK coolers for the i7 980x are something else.

I've got an Athlon 64 X2 7750 "Black Edition" processor (which seems to be AM2+ so I could upgrade possibly yay!) in there which is no slouch, really, but in the not-terribly-distant future I was thinking of upgrading it along with a new power supply, preferably one designed for gaming (the basic 480W supply I have is maxed out and my video board uses two of the IDE power cables currently x.x )

*looks at some benchmarks and pricing*

Best I can tell you there is check your mobo's website for details if it's worth upgrading or not. As I said, I can't really jump on this unless I get a new motherboard and start from scratch at this point.

If I did, I'd probably be looking at an ASUS Crosshair III, possibly even IV if we get up to it, or something equivalent. Only downside is I'd have to invest in some decent DDR3 RAM and that can cost a pretty penny depending on how much and how fast.

EDIT: I say all this and look what got benched today.

Intel burnt their bridges with their crummy Conroe processors. They may not make them anymore, but I bought them for speed, and all they gave me was a knockout punch to the wallet before disintegrating in a 3 GHz blaze of fury.

I plan on buying yet another AMD-based rig, perhaps when they release the bulldozer design spec. Until then, my socket 939 Athlon X2 4200+ serves me well.

Last Intel I had pretty much melted down and so did the motherboard...well, near the processor socket. Inducer blew in a light show that went straight to my speakers in a nice POW motion. Was from my seat to the floor unplugging everything in .8 seconds.

Been with AMD/ASUS since.

Oh yeah, that's where it's at, like with my Conroe 3GHz LGA 778 which burnt the motherboard to a crisp and refused to allow me to install Windows XP prior.
