Maybe I should pick up some one of these days, hopefully they are as good as you say they are.

And yeah, that is probably what Kassad meant.

We weren't even testing for that.

You can feed the moldy bread to ducks in the river if you have free time.

I sometimes do it, but I can't really touch moldy stuff without hazmat handgloves

Haha yeah some people have thrown out bread this way before, and probably better to dump the bread from inside the bag without actually touching the bread.

There's a donut place not too far from here, maybe I can stop there one of these days and get a sourdough donut.

I always check expiration dates. I don't want to get something just to have it go back within a day.

Sort of related: I sometimes look at the nutritional information on the sides of the packages.

Awwww, hope you didn't stay sick for days.

I almost ate a bad sandwich once when I was making a sandwich and I didn't notice the decay in the bread, I ended up spitting it out when it tasted funny in my mouth and I then realised that I had just used bad bread. I'll be paying more attention next time.

It was about three days, actually. And it happened more than once.

Three days can certainly take a while to recover.

Hopefully I won't be running into bad bread anymore myself.

I don't think it was from bad food, but then night my wife and I came home from the hospital with our newborn, we both had bad cases of a stomach flu. It might have been though. You never know.

I don't suppose it could have been hospital food?

I'll never touch any hospital food, nor put it into my stomach, I'm not really too fond of hospital food at all.

Expiration dates are more like... guidelines...

I've eaten some stuff that was, um, let me see....
Ice cream topping that was over a year old (no mold no problem!)
Canned crab meat that was over a year old (hey, it's canned. It's good forever!)
Various condiments that were probably overdue on a similar scale
... and other old things from the depths of the cabinet that I don't want to know.

For me, as long as it's not moldy or smelly or in any other way OBVIOUSLY bad, I'm going to at least give it a try before tossing it. Don't want to waste good food, you know?

I still can't believe I allowed myself to eat that crabmeat especially after having come off of continually feeling sick and still feeling ill that day. But then again I didn't know what else to eat at that house. I stand by my statement that I probably would have gone crazy had I had to live there the whole week and not the half week I stayed.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Depends on the food. Stuff like meat and dairy I'll follow it, but other than that, I'll just use my own judgement (mold, weird smells and colors, weird taste.).

My grandma used to keep stuff really fucking old and make stuff with it, and if I ever said anything about it she'd get pissed off at me, then I'd get sick.

I loosely follow them. Milk is usually still good for a few days after the expiration date, but I usually give it a whiff first just to check if it's still any good.

Likewise, if it is two or three days after the date, I keep it. Anything after that it is in the trash.

Of course, I still could care less about expiration dates on chips, candy, bread(as long as it isn't molding), and even Twinkies.

Milk and meat and stuff? NO.

Anything else? Upwards of two years. I just so a small taste test first to see if dying is a possibility with it.

Milk is pasteurized, it goes bad more based on when you open it than when it was made/bottled I've drank milk up to two weeks after the expiration date, and it was still good. Just give it a sniff, you'll definitely know if it's drinkable

Jelly doesn't really go bad if you keep it refrigerated - I'm pretty sure I have grape jelly from 2005, cause I hardly ever use it. I've had a jar of maraschino cherries for equally as long, since I only use them for Christmas baking. Too much sugar actually inhibits microorganism growth, that's why it's used to preserve things like fruit.

The expiration date on medicine is the date at which it's at 90% potency. You can definitely still use it, but it'll not be as strong. I'd still pass up on the Sudafed from 1997 (funny what you find when you clean out your cabinets!)

This is what happens when you grow up with cheapskate parents. If you're going to throw that food away, you better have a good reason!

All I really need to say is that my grandparents have a "refill canister" for some sort of shaving cream dispenser that has a copyright of fifteen years before I was born laying on their sink counter and that's really all I need to say on that subject.

The high score for foodstuffs is a box of Bisqwik with an expiry date of August 1997 (that, of course, they still claim is perfectly good)

We found a frozen chicken in my in-laws freezer a week ago that was from 2005... It went straight to the big white trash bag. Frozen is frozen, but no thanks.
