A rather interesting look at copyright law and the demonization of consumers by the EFF

Yea, copyright is ridiculous, and has definitely gotten out of hand... =(

And seriously, many people can't afford to pay 2 million dollar fines, and often end up in debt for the rest of their life because of it...

I agree that piracy doesn't inherently have these huge harms that the corporations propagate, and indeed may serve to benefit corporations more than pirates and with an absolute minimum of effort. Pirates obviously try to keep violence to an absolute minimum, and piracy has no meaningful connection with the drug trade or human trafficking or anything so morbid. Many "pirates" simply establish their basic right over their personal property, and the rest is minutiae. The other, much-demonized pirates often simply play the role of a market force, showing corporations that they cannot just fleece entire populations with repetitive, outdated techniques which only benefit the top few at the expense of the masses.

Indeed, pirates play the quintessential "Robin Hood" role, turning a market where a few agents control the entire market--an oligopoly, essentially--into one where individuals of all sorts play a part on both the supply and demand sides. They provide massive social benefits by fostering an infrastructure which broadens access to educational and creative resources. It's really a shame that the US government--which fails its own citizens so massively in practically every facet of life--along with other financially-interested countries, exert public resources to completely eliminate Somalia's ability to exert control over its own territory, and more eminently, its scarce resources and the fragile ecosystem that has been thus protected from overfishing.

Terrorism? Only the most disingenuous speaker would attempt to connect the dots between the locally-acting Al Shabaab and Al Qaeda, but amazingly the American press manages to do so. Compared with the hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths in Iraq over the past few years, the number of deaths have been in the single digits and hostages treated kindly unlike those in Abu Gharib.

I think that the US has fucked up enough in Somalia and shouldn't use this false pretense of piracy/terrorism to continue their unethical corporate activity.

We need to make a mashup video that has content from every company that pulls crap off of youtube.

And then see who orders the takedown first

And all get together to upload countless copies of it. Not a bad idea.

Too busy sharing a banned Tiny Toons episode with my friends. Y'know, being a criminal and all.
