Just bought it at midnight from Wal-Mart. It is amazing in 1080p on a 60" HDTV. Buy it if you have Blu-Ray. Copying DVD to iPod touch format to watch at work. I'll be really tired because its 2 hours and 40 minutes long! Less than 2 hours of sleep if the baby cooperates.

So nobody else was as excited about the blu-ray release like I was? I've watched it 4 times so far, not always paying attention to it (playing on laptop with it on the TV) but really like this movie. The problem with watching movies over and over is that you get to a point where you expect something else to happen... but it never does!

Too bad there was no combo pack with a digital download. I had to settle for the Blu-ray & DVD combo. Tried converting to iPod video directly from the DVD but it was all blocky and green so I had to copy the DVD first with a decoder. I was able to convert it to iPod video this time with good quality but for some reason the audio was in spanish even though my settings were for the default audio channel. Tried converting again with channel 1 and its running at home so I'll see if its in english when I go home for lunch.

My tech friend received his blu ray copy of avatar, his came with both the dvd and blu ray versions of the movie, but I guess the blu ray movies are supposed to come with dvd's too I suppose. Hope my tech friend will let me watch it if he brings it to the computer store one day, when there's free time of course.

I don't really have need for blu-ray at the moment seeing as I don't have an HDTV, and rarely watch movies anyway. Plus, for me Avatar isn't a movie that I'd get much out of multiple viewings. For me, that's a movie you see once in theaters to blow you away, and then maybe watch again years later once you've forgotten everything in it. I saw Avatar twice in theaters, and during the second viewing I was bored out of my mind, although it did allow me to pick up on a bunch of nuances that I missed on the first showing.

I suppose blu ray isn't important, I'm not a big fan of it really, as long as the movie is playable I'm fine.

My tech friend owns an HDTV at his home so he can watch those blu ray discs in all their glory, something I cannot do here at home since I do not have such technologies which really isn't a necessity to live anyways.

Guess I'll just watch avatar in DVD form though, when I get the movie that is.

I guess not every one has an HDTV. Its still probably 5-10 years before they are more common place. I'm lucky enough to live with my in-laws who have a 60" HDTV (but none of that 120hz or 240hz crap). Now, if it wasn't for me they would never watch anything in HD. They still record programs on non-HD channels with their HD DVR box... They rent DVDs instead of Blu-Ray... and I had to buy a PS3 just so we could watch the best HD out there with Blu-Rays...

I compared the DVD upconverted and the Blu-Ray of Avatar and there is just no competition between the 2. Blu-Rays are very crisp and clear with vibrant colors. I only buy movies I want to watch more than once though, such as Avatar, Transformers, and soon Lord of the Rings.

I can vouch for the clarity of the picture. My dad downloaded a Blu-Ray rip of the movie, and it's pretty much crystal clear. Too bad the computer wasn't powerful enough to handle it, and it jittered through any intense scenes.

Have not seen the movie yet. I was wanting to buy the Blu-Ray but my dad, who has seen the movie, claims it's only worth a shit in Theaters.

Is this true? He means 3D and all.

I would agree. This is a movie that is MEANT to be seen in 3D at the theaters for the full experience. Either that or on a freaking huge ass HDTV with Blu-Ray. I mean, the main selling point of the movie is the visuals, so watching Avatar any other way seems like missing the point to me. You're in luck though as I guess they will be re-releasing Avatar in theaters again this August for everyone who missed it the first time around. Damn James Cameron knows how to make money.

2.7 mil copies in 4 days making it ready to surpass the Dark Knight as the # 1 blu ray ever... in just 4 days. The Dark Knight has 2.9 mil copies from release to now.

I would say its a success. I will agree that this should be watched on a large HDTV (40+) for the best experience, but it is not required to enjoy it. On DVD with a smaller TV, you'll see plenty of stunning visuals. On Blu Ray on sub 40" TVs, it'll still look amazing but you won't feel the immersion of a large screen. It was amazing in 3D but the blu ray is just as stunning, on a large TV...

No. Nostalgia Critic agrees with you, and he has excellent movie taste. And frankly, I see where you both are coming from. The plot, characters, and other elements ARE average, I'm not denying that. And if this movie didn't have ground breaking graphics directed by James Cameron, it probably would have made no waves whatsoever.

This is by no means the greatest movie ever made. However, I personally greatly enjoyed it along with a ton of others. Though the elements were simple and average, I feel that all of the elements were pulled off well in order to give the viewer a totally submersive experience. Though the plot was simple and nothing new, it was engaging. It kept you interested for three hours, and that's saying a lot now a days with film. That coupled with the graphics gives you a cinematic experience that really pulls you out of this world for a while. I think it fully showcases what 3D is capable of doing for the cinema, and its like a preview into the new movie age. In that sense it is like an awesome tech demo. Not enough substance to warrant more than 2 viewings tops, but it gets you excited for whats to come.

I won a free copy thanks to a lottery going on. Going to get my copy this friday after work.

Can't wait until Sony adds 3-D capabilities soon on the PS3 so I can get the 100% experience.

You'll probably need a 3D tv to experience it 100%. 3D on a regular TV will only be about 92%, but that is pretty close.

Not at all. You'll probably enjoy this:

<object width="480" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/uJarz7BYnHA&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Though I have to say, the Avatar Rifftrax is great fun.

Now up to 6.2 million blu-rays and 13.5 million DVDs!

In just 4 weeks, thats pretty crazy. Steve Jobs and James Cameron both have an official internationl license to print money. They both probably use 100s as toilet paper.
