Do you usually use the numeric keypad on keyboards?

I generally ignore it for entering numbers and type with the numbers above the letters. In fact, I find the Num Lock light annoying and turn it off when it's on usually. I prefer having a keypad though, because of some ROM hacking utilities that require it. Also, sometimes older games and whatnot have a keypad-based control scheme and the keypad is nice to have in those cases.

I tend to use the numeric keypad if I'm entering an alt code or if I want to easily press the + and the * without having to hold down shift for them.

But yeah I tend to type in some alt codes sometimes, or like maybe ½ of the time.

I always use the top row instead of the numeric keypad on my full-sized keyboard because I'm used to using the top row on my laptops.

Three years of using laptops almost exclusively can do that.

Nope.

Even if I use a laptop now which has none, on the home computer I use the row because then I can use two hands to enter numbers, so it's generally faster to type.

Aside from mapping my emulator controls to it, no I don't. I miss it when it's gone, though.

I use both.

At the same time, when I'm disassembling code.

Yes. After having large numbers as a password for the college servers, I found it quicker to use the numpad.

Now, when numlock is off, and I don't notice I get annoyed. (woo 20 characters every time I lock my computer, not counting the password.)

If I'm entering just a couple numbers, I'll use the top row. More than that, and I find the keypad much faster. I miss it when I'm using my laptop.

I keep num lock on all the time.

My numeric pad is coated in 3 inches of dust.

Sources suggest 'no.'

Paulguy's Post configuration
When programming or just entering numbers in a sentence I usually use the row. If I need to enter a lot of numbers in to a table or something or I'm using a calculator program, I'll use the number pad. Also stuff like other people said like games and whatnot.

Well I use it when I need to type in larger numbers, and I also use it when certain games have controls mapped to the numbers on the numpad...

I use it quite often, actually. When I have to type any big number (say, bigger than 6 digits) I'll automatically switch to the numeric keypad.

I typically use it for entering certain Unicode characters, using the calculator, etc. but for most things, I use the top row instead. =P

If I'm typing letters and numbers, I use the top row. If just numbers, then I use the keypad.

I have a laptop, so it doesn't even have one.

I can hit Fn + Num Lock and then use part of the keyboard as if it was a numeric keypad but its quite impractical, so i use the top row...

I use it for Quake Live's movement keys, because they line up evenly.

Beyond that, I use it occasionally for numbers;
you know, which ever set is closer to my typing hand

You don't use ASWD? I can't play FPS or games where you run around (MMO-style) without them anymore.

I struggle with using the letter keys for movement in any game becauses the staggering throws me off. I always liked Commodore's old idea of a matrix keyboard in rows and columns without the typewriter staggering, but it never caught on.

I vastly prefer a gamepad instead of the keyboard for character movement though. If I use the keyboard, it pretty much has to be the arrow keys or the keypad.
