What a moron

He's never even played a video game apparently and he claims BRAID isn't artistic, yet Avatar was worthy of being considered art.

He said that fucking FLOWER isn't art.

I mean, shit

The three games she chooses as examples do not raise my hopes for a video game that will deserve my attention long enough to play it. They are, I regret to say, pathetic. I repeat: "No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets."

Except that it took thousands of years for such artists to come out and video games have been out... what, 40 years?

To truly emphasize my statement. Here is a spoiler of one scene from the first game

Imagine the 4th.

I mean hell, why stop at videogames? Remove books, movies, or even music from the picture. From this article's point of view: Nothing is art except the damn Mona Lisa

Which is bogus in and of itself because there's really nothing too special about most of those "historic" paintings, other than the fact that somebody famous created them.

Then what does he call the graphics and music in a video game? Or the storytelling, which even exists in silent text adventures?

Just because they didn't become technologically feasible to get a large audience until the 1970s doesn't make them not art. Maybe he just holds a grudge against a form of entertainment that barely existed (or didn't exist?) when he was young.

Edit: Used the wrong word before and changed the whole meaning of a sentence

You can't fight people like him. He has a set mindset and no matter what you try to tell him (and others like him) he still won't come around.

I respect Roger Ebert in general, but yeah this is total BS. All he's proving is that he obviously doesn't like video games, and he can't even make a good argument to support that belief.

If Roger Ebert wants to hate something that appears as a video game, then he should go hate and criticise Linden Lab's 'Second Life' for me, since that world is full of builders and people build there also as a form of art. Let's see what Roger has got to say about that.

Ebert is paid to express false opinions on boring shit, so when something comes along that he honestly never saw and isn't paid to opinionize, he needs to save face

Roger Ebert is a grumpy old man that has seen one too many bad movies and probably reeks of stale popcorn. He alone does not have the power to define something as "art" or "not art," just as I alone do not have the power to officially declare that UFOs are real. Why is anyone listening to what he says?

Except I posted it because he is judging it based on trailers and gameplay videos.

Half the experience with video games is the actual playing. If we all played a specific part of a game we would all have different emotions during it. Some of us would probably be really involved in it, others would be passive about it. That is part of something he doesn't get.

Most artists works only became "art" long after the artists died.

Seeing as videogames aren't going to die anytime soon, and they there are an infinite number of makers... I guess they'll never be art because the artists will never die ro something

But seriously, this guy's right. Some old man yelled at a cloud. Why do we care?

The man isn't a troll, he's just an idiot that is talking about things he doesn't fully understand, as shown by his comparison of Braid's time-rewinding, inability to lose mechanic to... taking back a move in chess, ignoring that, you know, you can't take moves back in chess. (Unless you break the rules, of course.)

His stance on this disappoints me, because a lot of other things he has to say are well-reasoned and intelligent.
