Not that you had any privacy left to lose, but there theoretically goes some more.

Federal security workers are now free to snoop through more than just your undergarments and luggage at the airport. Thanks to a recent series of federal court decisions, the digital belongings of international fliers are now open for inspection. This includes reading the saved e-mails on your laptop, scanning the address book on your iPhone or BlackBerry and closely scrutinizing your digital vacation snapshots.
You know, because your laptop/cell phone might have... a fork bomb or something. You rotten terrorist.

What the crap?

If they keep doing this sort of crap people might eventually revolt.

I'm not joking either, they keep taking away every privacy people have...

Plus, I don't see this helping preventing terrorism is anyway whatsoever. :/

You know, I'm willing to take the minute risk of terrorism attacks or whatever over living in an authoritarian hellhole.

Seems to me that if they do this with every passenger rather than just suspects, it would take forever. I wonder if they care though.

This is ridiculous... it's been 9 years since 9/11, and they still haven't given up? They should definitely spend more money on stuff like medical and environmental research rather than wasting it on stuff like this and the military. =(

It's all kind of worthless, anyway, as most of the people who get through do so by the negligence of pre-existing security protocols by the uneducated people hired to man the systems, not because they haven't yet banned everything liquid and everything solid and all clothes from the plane.

Not cryptographers, it's a great time to be a cryptographer.

In any case, more than this in itself being important, I'd be more worried about this as a precedent--it's not like they don't do this when you cross the US-Mexico border, but it's not like they will press unless they see anything suspicious, and we all know how easy it is to evade suspicion. So it'll be interesting how federal intelligence groups actually weigh in on this stuff.

I wonder what they do if you're hard drive's encrypted. Are you obligated to give them the decryption key? Could you be charged with obstruction of justice for refusing?

Ugh.

I wonder what would happen if I formatted my external hard drive to use ext3 if I continued using ubuntu 9.10?

Unless they got linux PC's too, there is no way that my data can be read, is that an obstruction of justice too?

And yeah, lots of people will revolt if the invasion of privacy continues.

Just use that fancy encryption which can encrypt to show one thing which is harmless with one key, and with another, hide the actual stuff which would be invasion of privacy for them to look through.

They'd be unable to tell the difference, as theoretically there are plenty of different valid keys, they just usually cause garbage data and don't decrypt it.

I'm starting to wonder if it's safe to take the nearly 100 pirated DVDs I have in a suitcase when I move to the USA in a month. :/

They are seriously getting too paranoid over this.

Revolution happens when you push the people too far. Go on guys, keep pushing, just a little more...

Yes, as I always say, this is a reason to encrypt everything. The dual-key system is nice; you just have to use it correctly. A pristine never-used install of XP is going to look funny, and to prevent the "hm why does the 500GB hard disk have 480GB unused" problem they set it up so the OS thinks it has the entire disk... which means keep stuff backed up. (Ideally, in a safe deposit box encrypted with a different key, which you change every time you update... but that gets more into how to keep backups than how to encrypt a disk.)

Hey, I don't want to see people get hurt (save for the ones dumb enough to deliberately blow themselves up), I'd just love to see someone demonstrate how badly the TSA fails at keeping people safe. Yeah, gather everyone into a crowd that any random person can join while you slowly check them one by one for explosives and annoy them, what could possibly go wrong. I'd love to see their reaction, whether they and/or the people finally realize how retarded the whole system is or just go ahead and make it even more retarded.

The TSA knows they don't provide any actual security, but this seems like the only thing that could make the general public realize that and actually upset people enough to do something about it.

That would just make them move it to the entrance instead of at the gates.

Missing the point.

Yes, that would be missing the point. Moving it to the entrance won't stop any random nutjob with a bomb up his butt detonating himself in it. Hopefully, people would realize that they're not doing any good no matter where they do it.
