Just added the game to the Wiki, btw: http://wiki.rustedlogic.net/Doubutsu_no_Mori

Not much content yet, tho, much TODO...

Probably not until we get accurate (non-HLE) emulation of the N64's graphics chip. Unless I'm mistaken (I haven't used an N64 emulator in years), emulators still fake N64 graphics by using your 3D accelerator to render everything, and thus text that was designed to match the N64's low resolution and appear sharp on a TV screen is going to be filtered and upscaled to whatever resolution you're using, and thus look like crap.

The Direct64 graphics plugin actually has quite accurate emulation. However, it doesn't support very many games.

MESS does low-level emulation, and some of the screenshots are rather promising.

Edit: If it bugs you about missing files, I can send them to you.

Okay, thanks all. I'll get started on some of those soon.

I apologize for the slow pace of wiki updates, I've been busy with real life stuff.

"Forest Map Select" - Advance through title screen, etc. until you get to Totakeke's first two-choice question. Now, hold R and select the second option, and when you're supposed to return to the title screen you arrive at the map select.

Sorry about the delay, Supakitsune.

Here was me thinking these codes'd never be found or released, haha!
Thanks for finding 'em, by the way. I'm gonna dig through the maps and see what I find.
And sorry for bugging you about it so much and whatnot.

Don't worry, I'm the personification of lazyness at times, so bugging me for stuff tends to be necessary I can imagine that if you didn't bug me about the codes, they really would've been lost, as there probably aren't that many people interested in the original game, at least in comparison to the GCN or later ones.

Well, that would explain why I found the Metroid 2 credits in the SML2 ROM.

SML3 (Wario Land) also uses this engine (more like its instead heavily based off SML2's, and uses the same map format iirc)...kind of funny as Wario Land 4 is also based off a Metroid engine I sadly lack much assembly know-how but if you ever found any hidden gems in Wario Land you would forever be godly in my eyes

I know for a fact the instruction book lists a few locations that were never actually used directly the game (either as levels or overworlds) on its map...Fork Tree was a huge one (although there was a similar level, the instruction book labels it in a manner implying it would have been its own world, perhaps a mini or hidden one similar to Sherbet Land..)...Capri Sea was another one I recall from the in-book map. Can't remember others, though I remember racking my brains trying to find these stages back in the day at age 6 only to eventually write Nintendo and get the usual "sometimes stuff isn't always there in the final product" form letter.

I thought it was the other way around? I know I saw a screenshot of a debug room from one of the Metroid games that had WL4 stone blocks in it...

Maybe that was it then, though I could have sworn Metroid Fusion came out first. I could easily be mistaken though.

Wario Land 4: 08/21/01 - JP
Metroid Fusion: 11/17/02 - US (interestingly, released in US first by a few months.)

And yes, Metroid Fusion's test room is full of WL4 blocks.

Metroid is one of the few (only?) Nintendo series that now routinely gets North American releases first since the series is more popular here than in Japan. Wikipedia suggests that Metroid II was actually released here first, which I'm not totally sure about... but Prime 2 and 3 took several months to head over to Japan.

I know you said that you prefered Nes/Snes games

But I'd love to see what Mischief Makers on the N64 have as leftovers, it's my favorite game. Thinking about it, I haven't seen any leftovers/beta stuff from any Treasure's games. They're pretty niche, but of course, everybody here knows about Treasure. Is it because nobody bothered or is there usually nothing to find?

I've been trying for years to find out if any remnants of the Blackwing boss still exist in the King Arthur and the Knights of Justice ROM. The name is listed in the ROM's text alongside all the other boss names and one of the developers said it was his favorite boss fight in a Nintendo Power interview, and yet it's not in the final game.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about hacking to figure out how to find it if it's in there. But if you're looking for a challenge...

Maybe you could check out T&C surf designs. I've always loved that game for some weird reason, and the back of the box shows trophies, two-player simultaneous mode, and another character that wasn't in the game. You can check it out here:

Link to back of the box

The manual had the trophies in it too. It'd be really neat if there were a way to enable them or two-player simultaneous mode.

Talking about the back of boxes, I heard that on Final Fantasy Mystic Quest's box, there's a character you never get to play with, but I've never been able to find a big enough box

And I remember that on the back of the box of Mario Paint, there's a picture of the cutter fish that was used where you are not normally supposed to be able to use it

found a box pic
http://www.rfgeneration.com/images/games/U-044/bb/U-044-S-03190-A.jpg

If I recall correctly, the extra icon IS for the fish scissors which is only normally available in a certain mode. And the smallest picture on the box are the fish scissors in action where they shouldn't be

All signs point to the back of that box being a complete mockup (or at least early)... The status bar looks nothing like that, there's no trace of any of the graphics for a trophy/counter in the ROM still, and... yeah.

Sorry, but that looks like it's gone forever.

Aww, that's a shame! I've also heard that Mega Man 2 has some leftover level data from Mega Man 1 in it, maybe this would be another game to check for material?

Ah yeah, good point. I've seen that somewhere, but I can't remember which site. I wanna say The Mechanical Maniacs, but I'm not certain. There's also a couple sets of unused tiles floating around. I got a pic from my old wiki, but I don't really know what kind of a description to put in. Maybe I'll just post up the image and let someone else do the dirty work.

Edit: Done. Now there's no sitting around to be done! Except for me, 'cause I did my part. :p
