Do you use them, and what are some of your favourites past and/or present?
I stopped using screen savers a while back, after I found myself more likely to use the computer for a while without touching the keyboard or mouse (i.e., playing a game with a gamepad, at school listening to the teacher, or watching a video) than I once did.
In Windows we had the starfield screen saver for a while and my dad said "Touch the mouse, it doesn't like stars" to explain the concept to me I used to like the flying Windows logos and that one with 3D pipes growing on the screen. I never liked the default Windows XP screen saver with the periodically jumping but otherwise stationary Windows logo, which, IIRC, activates itself on the login screen regardless of your own screen saver settings.
I'm not a big fan of screenssavers, the reason being is that they are just annoying to me, infact I use my computer so much that I don't really have any need for a screensaver so I just disabled them on my setup.

Right now, I'm using the 3D Text screensaver, which says “Spread Chrome”... on 98, it's Mystify, and on the Performa 575, it's a random screensaver provided by DarkSide, a good screensaver app for older Macs. =D
I think most of the XP screensavers work on Windows 7 anyway, so I can get Mystify on Windows 7... I think that's always been my favorite screensaver for some reason.
There were 2 screensavers that I did like a long time ago in the Windows 95 era, OpenGL Maze and Flying Windows.
I would just have fun watching the maze with that particular screensaver activated, not sure if those 2 screensavers I listed actually work in the newer windows, though I'm sure they do, only one way to find out myself.

Haha I'd watch the 3D maze for... way longer than is probably normal.
I also liked one of the windows 95 plus! screensavers where it had cubes with parts of the desktop on it, and they'd stack up... I would watch that for a long time, hoping that it'd eventually complete, but it obviously couldn't. :p
This is another one of those situations of not having internet and there being nothing on TV, so gotta do something to occupy yourself.
I had the star one for a long time, I don't remember what its called. When I first got dual monitors, I downloaded a matrix screensaver. It was the coolest, it was exactly like the screens from the movies. It was random and didn't have any stupid messages show up while it was going. Since then, I've just made my monitor shut off after 10 minutes of idle. I read somewhere that not using a screensaver and just turning the screen off can save a lot of energy.

Haha, I remember the cubed screensaver from the Windows 95 plus! pack, that one was certainly fun to watch.
There was another screensaver that I liked, though it dates back much farther in the past, I do recall a screensaver that showed the windows and desktop melting, but it could have been just a dream for all I know. Can anyone confirm if this old screensaver actually exists? It had to have been older than Windows 95 itself, if I'm correct of course.
Believe it or not, my home computer uses... Electroplankton! Yeah, the official one they released. I don't use any on this laptop because it would drain power from its already puny battery life.
I loved the old Windows 98 screensavers. I used to take screenshots of them, actually.

Speaking of screenshot, I did like to customise my mazes a lot with different scenery pics and some funny looking pics too, it was fun changing textures in the OpenGL Maze screensaver.
Oh yea, I made a customized version of the 3D Maze screensaver once using Resource Hacker... hell, I even changed out the "computer desk" image that would appear randomly in the maze. =)
I suppose I could have used resource hacker when I was very young at the time, only then I didn't know about reshack when I was about a mere 14 years of age. Good idea to change the textures in the Maze screensaver itself with your own custom touches.

On XP I used the default one, as I'm not in the room anyway if the screen saver kicks in. For longer time spans, shutting off the screen (an old CRT) will save more energy and may prevent the burn-in effect as well.
I never used any other ones beside the default ones installed by the system, with one exception, when I downloaded one Matrix screen saver. After a reformat I forgot to grab it and never bothered to put it back on.
Now, with Windows 7, I just use the "Ribbons" one. I actually like it, although I probably won't see too much of it anyway.
No screensaver here. A while back I used to use the Bubbles one that comes with Windows 7, but nowadays I just turn the screen off when I'm not using it.
At school, though, I have it set up so that after two minutes it goes to the scrolling text screensaver and locks the PC. Too many people messing with my shit.

Way back in the day I loved playing around with the After Dark screen savers. You know? The ones with "Bad Dog" and the "Flying Toasters". To this day those are my favorite screensavers especially since a lot of them were interactive like "You Bet Your Head". Now though I don't really have a use for them. If I'm in the mood I'll usually use something from "Really Slick Screensavers" or I use this one I found of a Koi fish pond that you can customize with your own music. I really only turn the screensaver on when I want a little ambiance to accompany my room as I clean it though. Other than that they just get in the way.

I remember seeing one of those at work one month ago, one of the other techs played a prank on my boss and he actually thought that one of the tech PC's had actually crashed, but then the tech revealed what happened and so the boss knows about that screensaver now. Those were fun times, still kind of fun to do to someone who doesn't know about such screensaver.
My screensaver is one I wrote myself. It monitors my web site's access logs and displays requests on the screen, which gradually fade out as time goes on. It's basically a full screen tail -f access.log, except it also displays the flag of the country that the request originated from.
