Using Xvid, I've never had YouTube completely annihilate the quality of any of my videos.

One thing I wish they did was allowed videos through unprocessed. Just have them go through a validation process and if it fits some parameters (size, codec, length), keep it as-is.

Like, taken directly from whatever source? Yeah, it can do that. I can immediately upload from my camera to YouTube and it'll accept it. Depends on your camera and settings of course.

IIRC youtube does not take mkv, which it really should. :/
Why should it?

do you seriously have to try to be contrary about everything

I've never once had this happen to me, and I've used many formats.
"It hasn't happened to me" doesn't mean "It never happens, your argument is invalid".

And you do this again and again until you finally find a format combo that it accepts and your encoder can handle and the result isn't utter garbage and it's not over the size limit and the sound stays synchronized.
If you aren't using Xvid you have issues already. And if you have troubles keeping a video under 1GB then you really have issues.
"You're wrong because you're not using my favourite codec." Anyway:
$ ffmpeg -i mk64-lightspeed.ogv -vcodec xvid foo.avi
[...]
Unknown encoder 'xvid'
(and yes I checked the available format list for anything that might be xvid under another name)
The raw video I just uploaded was 158MB, at 640x480, just under 5 minutes. You don't think a longer/higher-resolution video might have some trouble staying under 1GB?

Then you go to view the video and discover all the info you entered was not saved.
Never had this happen to me, and when it does, it says it couldn't save info WHILE I'm uploading.
"Never happened to me, therefore never happens."

Then you discover that the pause function is mostly useless as it hides all current annotations when it triggers, meaning any message you wanted to show would have to be added into the video before uploading, which kinda defeats the point.
And you are completely wrong here. Pausing keeps whatever annotation is up.
Nope. Add a note, then a pause. As soon as it pauses, the note disappears. Doesn't matter the order, length etc. I just did this yesterday and a friend confirmed it does not work. Possibly this is a bug that doesn't happen every time, but that's another case of "never seen it, never happens".

Then odds are your video quickly gets deleted because the half of a quiet, muffled song you had in the background encoded at 128kbps and then again at 96kbps, mixed in with the loud voices and sound effects, was considered a copyright violation.
Ugh not this shit again. First of all, if your sound is muffled it is due to you compressing the audio. When compressing a video always leave the audio uncompressed, as it will always sound like shit when compressing.
There are going to be at least two passes for most songs:
  • The song being encoded as MP3 in the first place.
  • If you want to do any editing, the result has to be compressed again, unless you want raw PCM audio in your video file (have fun keeping that under 1GB).
  • Youtube encoding to its own format.

Two, you won't get a copyright violation simply due to background noise and if you do, you can dispute it. Even then, if you upload something with a copyrighted song, guess what? You get an ad stating where to buy the song. OH MAN THAT IS SO EVIL OF YOUTUBE!
Do you have any idea how many videos have been outright removed because of exactly what I described? No ad, no chance to dispute, it's just deleted.

Or because the camera passed by a can of Coke at one point. Or because some company made a completely false accusation.
Paranoid a bit, are we?
Both have happened.

(My favourite was the music was a copyright infringement - on a video with no sound at all.)
The users always have control over the content on YouTube, and they can report anything as anybody.
So shouldn't those reports be reviewed for accuracy before acting on them?

Do you work for Youtube/Google by any chance?

I've had four videos removed and my user account disabled all at once. One vid was of an ASM hack of SMW, and the other three were Trackmania courses I had made.

Annoying or not, the ads aren't going away, and they're not likely to be adblocked (ABP can usually get rid of ads in Flash, but not on YouTube), so you're just gonna have to...

Um... I don't see any ads on YouTube and I'm using ABP. Maybe I have a better block list or something like that, but on YouTube itself I get nothing.

Yea, much like how Windows 3.x would say an "Unrecoverable Application Error" or "General Protection Fault" whenever a program crashes... I always thought that was annoying. =/

Too bad they dumped the 9x crash dialog... they really should have implemented that in 2000/XP instead, since the error reporting dialog doesn't give anything specific.

No, I don't mean devices. I mean video files. Even if you were to upload a .flv directly, it'll still transcode it. Although there's no reason why it shouldn't just be able to take an h.264 video + mp3 audio in a .avi file also. Just sounds like laziness in implementation at a rather severe cost of video and audio quality.

I've uploaded some rather malformed videos (1 frame but several minutes long h.264 and PCM audio in a avi formed by mencoder) and YouTube did pretty well with it. It seems so random in what it accepts and doesn't accept. Though the many types of "mpeg-4" don't make these things simple at all, let alone goofy nonstandard implementations of some. Then broken encoders and weird containers and bad containers. Bleh, what a disaster. None of this would've been a problem but windows media, QuickTime and realmedia had to compete with their shitty players and plugins that everyone got sick of. Fuck you realnetworks, Microsoft and apple, you shouldve just released plugins for QuickTime and directshow/vfw and optimally an open source version for all those other platfoms.

I have hosted a video on photobucket before, it worked just fine...

and I really don't want my watchers (the few I have) to have to deal with seeing adds in front of all my videos before watching them, mainly as I hate it myself so much when I try to watch videos at other places.

I'm 100% fine with adds on sites, but honestly, having to wait 20sec before every video to see an add that I can more likely then not even get.

Screw attack have been doing this ever since their new layout and it's pissing me off quite a bit. It's just not enjoyable to watch their stuff anymore even though the quality of the content have gone up. :/

The ads on gametrailers aren't TOO bad, but it's usually the same one or 2 commercials over and over again. But it's nice they keep them short.. usually no more than 20 seconds... not like the minute long epics they have on TV.
