Ever play a game right before going to sleep? You hear a voice in the back of your mind to save before you turn off the system and/or close your eyes. I'm usually good at saving right before I pass out and turn off my system. Apparently that didn't happen last night. I could have sworn that I saved my game before I went to sleep. No big deal, since it was only about ten minutes of play but what if it was longer? Then I would have been a bit more pissed off than I am right now.

Have you ever saved a game only to find out that you didn't?

Maybe you didn't play the game at all and it was all a dream.

...um. Yeah, it sure happened to me! Especially with savestates (even more especially on DS emulaturs, such as Lameboy), I often managed to load it instead of saving and lost some progress.

I more have the problem of falling asleep with the game on and the battery runs out while it runs over night.

A few days ago though, I managed to save while I was tired and about to fall asleep. Later it turns out I saved AFTER accidentally killing zapdos! (Heart gold)

I've fallen asleep when playing Final Fantasy VII a long time ago... (at least it was on the world map, and not like in the middle of a battle or anything...)

Also, when I played FF6 once, I accidentally hit Load State instead of Save State after getting into the World of Ruin and ended up back at the beginning of the Floating Continent... =/

I was playing FF5 several months ago and got up to the point where you get the dragon. Later, I wanted to play again and apparently I had lost almost all my progress and was back toward the beginning, I think at the pirate ship or something Maybe something didn't get transferred between computers, or the paths weren't updated and really the data was still there. Damn modern programs putting some data in (My) Documents or wherever rather that being nice and compact in 1 folder (if that happened, but some other programs have annoyed me with that so I can still bitch about it).

Other than that, I've hit load-state instead of save-state a few times Especially switching between emulators that have the keys in different places.

I tend to make sure I am saving right before turning off the game.

I kinda miss when some games asked you if you wanted to continue and you could say no and they'd be all "Fine, rest well" and nice bg music played as your character faded away.
Even if that's only in two games I've played.

On the other hand, I have a bad habit of loading old savestates... Not intending to save or do something else, just thinking it was used recently.

There's also when I save later than what I thought, missing some lost forevers.

I remember that in Animal Crossing... It was pretty nice, though annoying when you had to save and ended up needing to run halfway across town just to do so.

I don't pay too much attention to "proper" saving, but instead just try to save as often as possible/neccessary. Yes, even in games where saving takes forever, like in Vagrant Story. Many different save files are crucial in open games like Fallout 3 anyway, where it can be decisive, WHEN you saved last. Try to blow up ... uh, no spoilers, and it can be bad if you wanted to other things first if your auto-save got overwritten and you have neither quick nor regular save ready.

And the risk of losing a precious save due to a faulty (system) memory card block, power shortage or damaged hard disk is not as problematic as losing your term paper or work you did before on the computer (although you will backup crucial stuff like this anyway beforehand regularly on different media/places), but it can be very annoying indeed.
Never had too many trouble here, even my old Lufia - Rise of the Sinistrals (in Germany just "Lufia", as the prequel never came out here) cartridge save with 97 hours and multiple clearances in the Ancient Dungeon still works.

When I went to Universal Studios one year, I brought my Ps2. When I went to play Soul Calibur, I go an error message. My saved file had gotten corrupted somehow. I was so mad.

This actually isn't a bad idea. I remember there actually being a backup save in these games, in case the primary one ends up corrupted. I remember getting that once in Fire Red, actually.

Is it bad that I have my important Ps2 saves on two different memory cards that are locked in a safe? I also have back-up XB360 saves on a memory card that are also in the safe.

Soul Calibur 3 corrupted my whole memory card. I was also filled with RPG saves.

I was not happy that day.

I hate this though, there are several DS games that does this. (Kirbys magic paintbrush, SM 64 and more)
On my flash cart, it make a new save for that, but don't bother removing the old ones!

My sister and I had a 3rd party Playstation memory card. For the first couple of years, it was ok. Then one day, it decided to flip out and somehow uncalibrate itself. We lost data from games we'd been playing off and on for years. We were very sad that day. And then we cried a week later, when it decided to do it again. And then again. We stopped playing in-depth Playstation games after that.

Dying battery... at least I would think so, as I remember my Saturn doing something similar after a few years, saying that it needed to reset the date/time and lost its saves. =/

I had a real Mew in Red, before I even knew anything about hacking, and came across a glitch trainer playing with Missingno. He used an attack that erased the save file. FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Super Mario World also erased itself when I had 95 exits found.

My Pokémon Red's save battery died a couple years ago, and now it won't even work correctly. My Blue and Crystal still work, however... but who knows for how much longer... (I think Crystal batteries are known to last longer than Gold or Silver ones... =D)
