I run firefox, and use the prism addon for any high trafficed sites, like jul.

The first time I went on the internet was with the Netscape browser,
and followed it through with the Mozilla browser and then Firefox.

Firefox for a good while now; I use Chrome as my backup browser if need be.

I would have used Netscape to start out too.

Back in the day, my parents used Netscape on their computer and since I browsed the Internet from their computer too, I used Netscape as well. However, over time I started joining boards and such and my parents wanted me to use IE and Outlook Express because neither of them used it and stuff like bookmarks and passwords wouldn't interfere.

I continued doing that until I switched to Mozilla in mid-2004.

Well, these days you could just log into the OS under a different profile which would solve all those problems.

I remember IE on Windows 3.1...

Yeah, I don't think my parents would have accepted the concept of selecting their username instead of mine at startup, even with no password. So I had to put up with their tiny resolutions and huge text in weird fonts until I got an Internet-capable computer in 2002 (actually one of their old ones until I got a new one a few months later).

Back then in 1999, I was still using Internet Explorer on my old Windows 98 machine I used to have, and when I upgraded to Windows XP I went with IE6 until I discovered Firefox when it was at its early beta stages. Ever since then I had stopped using IE, though I had stuck with IE those early years since I didn't know of any other browser at the time besides Netscape.

I miss the days when the Mozilla suite was still around. (And yes I do realise that Firefox is its descendant.)

Actually, when I used IE... I went with Avant Browser.

It was faster.

I'm not really too fond of Add-Ons and shell front ends, aside that they add functionally and all, just liked to keep my IE clean of such add-ons when I used IE back then, though now I no longer need to worry since I use Chrome and sometimes Firefox.

Avant wasn't really that bad. Definitely better than base IE back then.

Then FF came along and I finally had choice; although I got pissed when I tried a beta or two and all my settings went kaput.

Yeah, the firefox betas were kind of flaky long ago, at that time I was using the mozilla suite while firefox was still being worked on.

Luckily for me I put my links into a txt file, to this day I still don't really use bookmarks.

I always got annoyed by those toolbars that seem to install themselves into IE. My parents had a bunch for Netscape, too.

Extensions are fine and often useful. Toolbars take away from the valuable page-viewing area

I've always hated toolbars, I tend to avoid toolbars like the plague that they are.
The most annoying toolbar to me was the Yahoo toolbar, but then again I didn't like yahoo much anyways and I was always a google user.

I had Yahoo toolbar, lol. It was the only one with a decent pop up blocker back during the pop up craze. I turned everything else off on it, except for the pop up blocker. Other than that, I never used any toolbars. My wife used a few when we first met... the first thing I did was remove them from her computer. It was already a slow machine and she had like 3 on there with some IE skin. That was disastrous.

I make an exception for a single search bar (like Firefox's, which is Google by default) that doesn't use up extra vertical space. Searching the Web is something I do often.

I vaguely remember school computers having "Mozilla Firebird" back in 2004-2005 or so.

I suppose the 'Google toolbar' is okay, though I have never actually used it myself since I don't bother with toolbars in the first place.

I like to stay minimal in any way that I can.

And at least you can remove or hide the toolbar. It's not like toolbars appear without warning after a drive-by download. I've seen those silly pictures where 60% of IE is taken up by various toolbars.

Yup, toolbars can be hidden/disabled, however they are still installed and can be reselected.

And yes, I know about the picture with an overload of toolbars, since a tech showed me once.

Sorry, but I'm still steering clear of toolbars...

I switched over to Pale Moon after readiing about it from lifehacker.

It's pretty much exactly like Firefox, but faster.

Seems to be very good so far.

And I mean EXACTLY like Firefox, it even keeps all your add-ons and extensions and such.

So I just installed it.

What the fuck is this thing? It keeps coming up when I Ctrl+Tab and it's fucking broken and getting on my last nerve:

Tab search?

Firefox used to have this micro theme miniFox, which took the default theme and removed as much spacing and padding as it could. The overall size reduction was amazing. You could fit so much into so little space. Sadly it's no longer developed and doesn't work with new versions. (Overriding compatibility just causes a lot of breakage.) Someone ought to remake it...

I was also using Personal Menu to get rid of the menubar and instead have two buttons (one for bookmarks menu, one for a menu containing all the other menus), but it stopped working...

So right now I have a menubar, a bar containing back, forward, refresh, stop, URL and search, and a bookmark bar on which all of the icons are nameless, thus fitting a few dozen of them in. (Including the recent/most visited dropdown and some useful scripts for navigation and image viewing.) Then tab bar, page, status bar. Pretty slim, but not as slim as I'd like...

At the moment I also have a pretty light browser for the fact that nearly all extensions are disabled, as well as Flash, so I can try to find what makes it freeze all the damn time. That does mean sacrificing some nice features though...
