Not sure if this has already been suggested, but what about a simple uploader so users can exchange (small) files without having to resort to free upload sites (and all their ads and pop-up bullshit)?

As much as I like the idea, the decision comes down to cost. That would require an increase in server capacity, and by the looks of the donations bar at the bottom of the thread... isn't very likely to happen. A quick google search found a site called MediaFire that allows you to upload unlimited files and make direct links (no wait 15 seconds to download crap).

Not really a cost issue (we have unlimited space and bandwidth, amusingly) .... more of a "I can't code from here" issue.

Seriously, trying to add a new block to the board resulted in about 4 minutes of downtime, no thanks in part to hurrr connection.

What the heck am I using godaddy for then? Hook me up!

On a serious note, do you have a development copy of the board? Why not try and implement things there before putting them live? I'm not an expert on PHP, but I created an image uploader with max file size, file type restrictions, etc. for a friends website one time. I'd be willing to help if needed.

The problem isn't that there needs to be a development version, the problem is that my connection is ass.

That much packet loss on your own network? Do you have an old router or something? Or are there too many people using the same connection?

It wouldn't even have to be as fancy as a PHP-based uploader. I don't know how many FTP accounts you can have with this host, but if you can have a lot, The Powers That Be could just create a new FTP account (probably with a small quota) for anyone who requests one (with good reason, of course) and just give them access to one folder.

I'm, ahem, borrowing wifi from somewhere else. I don't even know where THIS router is.

BooUrns: Yeah, that's a bad idea for a variety of reasons unless the person is genuinely trusted.

I see. Been there, done that. Did you try uploading under a different name then renaming it once its uploaded? That way a slow upload won't affect the board.

The FTP users is a bad idea. I checked the host and it can have unlimited FTP and anonymous FTP, but that doesn't allow for restrictions on file size or type like a PHP upload script can.

Well, it's probably possible to configure an upload-only directory from which nothing can be executed, and have a script periodically remove giant files.

Have you tried logging into the router (nobody ever changes the password) and rebooting it when it gets too bad, and/or using a free DNS service?

Even then, a PHP scrip would be more efficient at it since it can restrict file size, file type, and you could even make an admin/mod controlled option to allow or disallow uploads straight from the board administration.

I misread what X was saying earlier, I thought he meant he couldn't code it but then after he said what his connection was I realized he meant he can't code from his current connection and upload it without the board being inactive the entire upload. I don't think a DNS service would help his connection, its with his internet, not the host for the website.

Yeah, 8% packet loss to the router will surely be helped by using a different DNS server!

You may have missed the bit about borrowing this wifi from someone else and not knowing where the router actually is.

On top of that, doing anything that might threaten to break his fragile link to the 'tubes is a bona-fide Bad Idea™.
