The types could use a bit of adjustment, though I don't know about a whole new type. It won't change the fact that Ghost, Dark and Steel are semi-uber for their lack of weaknesses.
HG/SS has it almost perfect: types make sense (except maybe Magnemite), abilities don't usually fuck you, it works well. Compare to Ru/Sa where I'd frequently be completely unable to attack because an enemy is immune to almost every type of attack I have due to its bizarre type combination, and then has Levitate or something to make my last remaining attack equally useless (if not actually healing them).
Personally I've always found the storyline to be at least good enough. Something more interesting is nice every so often, but the games are fun as it is, and I rather like how they tend to chain together several side-quest-like tasks as additional plot. (Your goal is just go beat these people up, but before you can fight this guy, you need to go across the sea and get medicine, etc.) Ultimately it's fun to go around catching and raising the critters and exploring the world regardless of exactly why, as long as the world, events, etc are well-designed.
