Lain's post №871

Edit: A reboot of the router fixed it. Hooray.

This is very weird.

I cannot seem to connect to any FTP servers whatsoever. They all time out.

For instance:

Status:	Resolving address of blackcat.dalnet.ca

Status: Connecting to 75.127.98.110:21...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

Status: Resolving address of webdev.aanm.ca
Status: Connecting to 142.177.80.139:21...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

Status: Resolving address of amherstysmen.com
Status: Connecting to 216.83.31.91:21...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

I've tried FileZilla as well as ftp.exe, and even added FileZilla to my Windows firewall exceptions, and even disconnecting/reconnecting to the wifi.

My friend who is a room over apparently can connect to FTP servers just fine. I have no idea what to do at this point. The friend pretty much owns the switch and wireless router, so I can't go and change settings.

An update: For the past day or so now, I can connect to ftp servers, but when it attempts to get the directory listing, it times out.
And I also cannot torrent.
My two friends/housemates can though.

We have not tried that yet.

Do you use any of those IP blocking programs when you torrent? Also, is it just 1 FTP site that you've tried and it times out or have you tried multiple ones?

I don't use any IP blocking programs, and I've tried several different FTP servers.

Also, the network setup is like this:
Laptop ) ) ) ) WIFI (802.11n) ) ) ) ) 4-port router ===== 18-port switch ===== modem --- (INTERNET)

I never had this particular problem until a day ago. The router tends to overload if there's too much data flowing through, especially with two laptops, two full-size PC's, and a few game consoles.

Was anything else done before you couldn't FTP anymore? Like was the password on the router changed, or the switch added, or settings changed to the router?

Nope, nothing.
It just started happening one day. And I know that it's not my computer, because I brought it to work and ftp worked there.

What FTP program do you use? Have you tried other programs or directly through Explorer?

I've tried everything.

I can't even connect to VPNs either.

It's like the router hates me.

Yeah, it sounds like some blocking on the router. See if you can reset it to default settings either through the admin controls or doing a hard reset. Some have a button you have to hit with a pen head or some you have to plug an unplug a bunch of times. If you aren't sure how to, then look up your router model online and it should tell you.
