I haven't quite had it for a full year, but my Dell monitor is starting to lose its backlight, it will either shut off after 3 seconds or if it stays on it will flicker occasionally and shut off when I play a game. Sadly enough, smacking it on the backside is the only thing that gets it to work anymore.

Has this ever happened to anybody else?

Weighted Storage Cube Dispenser
Cake Slice
I've had this happen with one of my laptops, also less than a year after getting it.

More than likely, the backlights power board is dying, and will need to be replaced. There's not really any other way to get around this.

Alternatively, get a new one. I haven't really had any problems with my Acer monitor yet, and my specific model is well-reviewed.

Throwing that out there.

My old laptop's backlight died.

I had to shine a light on it so I could barely see it. :/

It's too bad there are no widescreen CRTs, as far as I'm aware... I'd love to have a 1440x900 monitor.

Are CRTs even produced anymore?

They might have been in 2007. That's when I got mine, anyway... in July, specifically.

This computer might even have been a bit weak for that time. Could be far worse, though.

My old school-issued laptop would do that kind of thing, IIRC. There was this tiny button near the screen that would sometimes fix the problem Later, the CMOS battery died, so it always thought it was 2002 or whatever.

CRT's can still do widescreen (it's actually useful since they're mostly limited by height, not width), you just have to shrink the vertical size so it doesn't look stretched ... even 1920x1080 works perfectly on a 17" CRT, just looks bad because of tiny pixels and 60Hz

The only screen that even died on me was the second 17" CRT I had (from 2000), it started shaking a bit then came blank ... even the older one from 1997 still works (only darkened), and my 19" LCD from 2005 is still in perfect shape

Once I was starting up the computer after the power flickered and turned it off during a thunderstorm, and I guess a lightning bolt hit very close to our house because the blue screen showing progress until it would restart Windows became RED.

*casts Raise Dead on thread*

Update. I just bought one that I've had my eyes on for a while now, AOC 22" LED monitor that's at 1680x1050.
It looks absolutely amazing!

I have the same one, Acer 22" widescreen. 1680x1050 isn't quite 1080p but its plenty big for computing. Since I sold my desktop and got a laptop, I brought it to work. Its great for spreadsheets and multitasking.

Did you ever get your old monitor replaced? My first 17" LCD from 2005 had the same thing happen but it had a 1 year warranty on it. I sent it in with the original packaging and receipt, got a brand new one that still works to this day. I used it as a 2nd monitor with my 19" and then this 22". 2960px wide is a lot of real estate!

Mine's not an Acer, it's AOC!

I sent in my old one to be replaced but I never got anything back, I tried contacting Dell and basically got the stupid employee on the phone each time going "lol i dunno lolol!!!!!"

It's for this reason alone that I don't think I'll be purchasing from them ever again. I still love my computer but the customer service is complete crap.

Ah, I misread. I tend to do that sometimes. AOC seems like a good brand, I've never had one though. If yours is the one I saw on their website, it has a better response time than mine (2ms vs my Acer 5ms) which is good for gaming.

I used an AOC with my old desktop, and I had no problems with it. It was a replacement for my old eMachines CRT with the busted power button.

Yeah, the 2ms response time was one of the things that drew me in. Games look utterly gorgeous on this thing and it's a lot easier to use PaintoolSAI with this as opposed to the other monitor that I was using.

If you want to find a pic of it, it's the V22 model, methinks. There's also a webcam on this thing, though I don't think it's high on my priority list to be using it.

Yup, looks like it does include a webcam.

Not a bad choice. I personally prefer monitors with as little edge space as possible, which is why I went with the Acer long ago. No bells and whistles for me, just pure LCD real estate.

What is the best 1024x768 LCD monitor for an older computer? I really want to replace my old HP CRT with a new monitor... =D

Not too many LCD monitors have a native resolution of 1024x768. Most 15" and 17" are best at 1280x1024 to which I would say an Acer 17" is the best bang for the buck if you don't need features, just a good screen. You can always do 1024x768 but it won't look as crisp as the native resolution of 1280x1024 would.

Most LCD monitors I've seen now a days are widescreen and those usually have many benefits such as much more width. A widescreen display with a native resolution of 1280x800 is kind of close to being 1024x768 except you get more width out of it.

2ms is definitely pretty sweet. While my Acer monitor isn't quite that quick, it's a 23" w/ 1920x1080

The few ms I lost were worth the price/resolution/size.
