At the Human Rights Campaign, we've been following Itawamba student Constance McMillan's struggle to attend prom with her girlfriend and wear the clothes of her choosing. A court decided her school was wrong to deny her attendance but stopped short of ordering them to hold the prom. So parents and private citizens offered to put on the prom, but details of that prom were mysterious and Constance wasn't invited. Then it was reported that the mystery prom had been canceled, but that another prom would be held at a country club in nearby Fulton, MS; Constance was invited and would be going to this prom. It took place this past Friday and was attended by exactly seven students -- Constance, her date and five others, plus some teachers and the principal as chaperons. How could this be? Quite simply and horribly, the event at the country club was a 'fake' prom and all the other students attended the 'real' prom at another location.

I am sure your jaw dropped to the floor as mine did when I read the news. According to Constance, two of the five other attendees had learning difficulties -- also apparently not worthy of the 'good' prom. There is so much going on here it's hard to find a place to start figuring out how something so unconscionable could happen -- but I will start with the students. We know young people can be cruel (ever seen the film "Mean Girls"?). Homophobia and harassment of LGBT youth in schools often runs rampant -- GLSEN's 2007 school climate survey found that 9 out of 10 LGBT students were harassed in the previous year. We also know that queer kids aren't the only ones being targeted. Anyone who is different faces the wrath of other students. Sadly, it was just last week when Phoebe Prince, an Irish immigrant high school student in Massachusetts, took her own life after being mercilessly harassed and bullied as the 'new girl'.

Knowing this, it is not a stretch to think that Itawamba students would be totally fine with attending a secret prom while fellow 'different' students were sent to a fake one.

Completely disgusting, the students and everyone else that knew and kept this a secret are monsters, the cruelty is insane.

Ugh

I will not rest until the use of "faggot" becomes as taboo as the use of "nigger" is now. Why do so many people think that homophobia is acceptable? I hear all kinds of homophobic slurs at my school too.

I don't know about that, Terra. "Faggot" can refer to a variety of things, such as a kind of meatball or a bassoon, and it can even (rarely) be a surname. However, the other one is pretty much exclusively a racial slur.

Anyway, this was quite a nasty thing to do, but I'm honestly not surprised. After all, they had already proven themselves to be ridiculously intolerant, so taking it one step further shouldn't really be that shocking.

Well, I mean using "faggot" (or anything else) as a homophobic slur in general. I really hate how common and acceptable it is to make homophobic remarks.

The ACLU is reported to be investigating, hopefully the school gets into a lot of shit for this.. but that doesn't change what happened. What a horrible story.

Hey, this can be stereotyping as well. Not all of us are homophobes. My sister-in-law happens to be a lesbian and I don't love her any less for it. My father is a pastor and even performed her union ceremony to her girlfriend. While my personal belief is that homosexuality is not right, I also believe that fish tastes bad... my point is it doesn't matter what I believe. We as individuals were not made to judge each other, thats left for God to sort out. We're just meant to love each other, regardless of our beliefs. I've met faithful "Christians" that were openly homosexual and seemed more in love with God than many heterosexual Christians I've known.

So, now that I've thread-jacked, I'll post a comment on the subject. I will agree that the actions of the school staff and other parents was wrong, I think there's more thats not being reported yet. Was this originally planned by the school but the parents or students boycotted and held their own? Regardless, this was intentional seclusion but I'm curious who purported it.

What the hell, I'm glad the situation is better here then in America. After all, over 59% of people are atheists here. I guess that makes the situation a bit better. Even though classmates do use the Czech equivalent of "faggot" on each other which I think is dumb but okay, they still respect homosexuals...

Ahhh, the Czech Republic, I've heard it's a paradise there compared to other Slavic countries... You can also see that in the huge amount of certain type of movies that come from Prague xD

Anyways, things like this make it so difficult to say that I'm an American. (actually, I always say I'm Puerto Rican, instead)

Yeah, a lot of European countries are better with LGBT rights than much of the USA. Michigan is really bad with LGBT rights, LGBT people are just outcasted and attacked here unless they pretend to be straight. It makes me really ashamed to have been born in Michigan.

I wonder if the South Park episode, The "F" Word, will eventually end up changing the meaning of "faggot"...?

Well, most people probably have this idea that Puerto Rico is very homophobic (with machismo) and this probably wasn't helped by the murder of a gay guy just a few months ago (he studied in my school a few years ago...). Nevertheless, I find this island relatively supporting with "live and let live" ideals. I came out last fall in front of my 12th grade class and this resulted in almost every student coming towards me to ... hug me and assure me that that wouldn't change our friendship. Support from the teachers, even the older ones was surprising to me, and to this day I haven't had any name-calling or bullying of any kind. I also don't live in San Juan or any big city, this is a very rural area.

So I'd say people (young people, at least) aren't as homophobic as most of the US. As for the laws, anti-discrimination laws passed way back in the early 2000s, and constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage have always failed (in the house, never did it manage to get a popular vote). We're stuck with a far-right governor that wants to ban gay marriage but the political parties in PR aren't democrat vs. republican but pro-statehood vs. pro-status quo vs. pro-independence.

Yeah, I know some parts of the Caribbean are bad in that regard like Jamaica, didn't know about PR though.

Michigan outlawed homosexuality until 2003 (and it was only legalized because of a federal requirement to legalize it), and all same-sex unions are still illegal here.

I was just about to post this video. I find that absolutely hilarious.

"Look out! It's a bunch of pissed off Faggots"!

I get called / call people Faggots all the time. But we are not gay (I do have one friend who calls me straighty or some crap like that. I call him a faggot too. Balances it out and we think it's hilarious. I don't literally call him a fag.)

My point being is that people should really chill out over this stuff. I stutter, but you don't see me flipping my shit when people "Stu-stu-stuttering stan" my ass or whatever. I tend to take that with a grain of salt. And duh, I already know I stutter. Thanks for reminding me.

Anyways, sorry about being off topic. And now back to your regular schedule:

These two girls deserve the prom they deserve. I just wish somebody famous would set these two girls up and put up a fucking prom of the millennium. But this is wishful thinking. And I just hope these two girls seek out the memory they want. Not all of this harassment bullshit that shits up the world.

Not to sound all stereotypical when I say this, but we should contact Ellen Degeneres and tell her about all of this if she hasn't already heard. She always does cool shit for people and would totally set them up with a bitchin' prom!
