UK Army research division creates prototype "Force Field" shielding on tanks

So apparently, Star Trek wasn't so far off with the idea of shielding blocking projectiles, because in tests, Tanks were able to take a lot less damage from repeated RPG rounds by using correctly timed blasts of electromagnetic pulses to knock away projectile munitions such as RPG rounds.

To Quote,

At a test in 2002, senior British Army officers saw the chassis of a Warrior infantry carrier, which was fitted with the early electric armour, survive repeated attack by RPGs before being driven away with only minor damage.

And since it uses a supercapacitor, I suppose eventually shields will be the "take damage, lose power, recharge" variety that Star Trek seems to like.

It seems to be just an anti-RPG mechanism so far, since it uses electrical magnetism to deflect the super heated copper that makes RPG's so destructive. But they are the greatest threat to tanks and armored vehicles, as most explosives or small munitions can't penetrate the conventional armor. It amazes me that this was tested in 2002 and we are just now hearing about it. Imagine how much further along the technology is today.

I think that science is always trying to catch up with science-fiction. This is just another step in that direction!

Yeah, it's just anti-anything-metal right now, but considering that this is just a first go at the tech, it's pretty good.

The article mentioned the shield would work on bullets too, but wouldn't be used as such since the existing plating was more than sufficient to deal with small-arms fire (makes sense).

Pretty awesome stuff. I love magnetism. :3

Quite an interesting idea. Obviously, it's no magical matter-repelling shield, but this is still remarkable. Also, if you notice at the bottom of the article, it seems they've also invented more effective armor that uses... holes! It seems counter-intuitive that holes would be good at stopping bullets, but it makes sense.

The similarity is pretty damn close.

There was even a prototype for "True Stealth" on the Discovery channel. There have even been youtube videos on this.

The footage I have seen on Discovery was something totally different though. And unfortunately I am unable to find it. It uses tiny mirrors and fibers to make it look like you are a part of your surroundings. It does not make you 100% invisible, but it's pretty damn remarkable.

If I can find that video I watched (Not the one above. It kinda looks green-screeny) I'll be sure to link it.
